Beta decay ofNa2732and their descendants

Abstract: The y activities from the P decay of Na isotopes up to "Na, which are formed in high-energy fragmentation and analyzed through mass spectrometry techniques, are observed, as well as those from their Mg or Al descendants. Their intensities are measured, in most cases, in absolute value. The radioactive halflives of ' Mg, ' Mg, and "Mg are determined. Delayed-neutron branching ratios P"are measured for ' Na, '"Na, and "Na. In some cases, partial branching ratios to excited states of the daughter nucleus are also… Show more

“…Far away from the valley of β stability, experimental evi- * tbraunroth@ikp.uni-koeln.de dence for a variety of interesting phenomena has already been found. Prominent examples are the collapse of shell closures [1,2], the emergence of new pronounced shell gaps [3,4], shape coexistence [5] and widespread regions characterized by quickly and continuously evolving nuclear properties, e.g. the evolution of quadrupole collectivity in neutron-rich isotopes around N = 40.…”

“…Measurements of γ decays and determination of the neutron separation energy were achieved in a thermal neutron capture on 26 Mg experiment [20]. Studies of the β decay of 27 Na were achieved from the fragmentation of iridium and uranium targets by protons to measure γ decays, β-γ-γ coincidences, and absolute intensities [21,22].…”

“…Static deformations near the neutron drip line have been observed for Sodium and Magnesium isotopes [16] and are inferred for some Sulfur elements from their β decay properties [17]. Studies of these nuclei have been limited to shell model calculations including two major shells [18,19] and to pure HF or relativistic Hartree calculations [7].…”
