Beta Convergence Analysis of Gross Value Added in the High-Technology Manufacturing Industries

Abstract: The paper examines the recent developments in the high-technology manufacturing sectors in the EU28 countries, focusing on the β-convergence of gross value added in the Manufacture of computers, electronic, and optical products, and the Manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations. We employ two dynamic panel models estimated using the system of generalized method of moments (GMM) to address the risk of an endogeneity bias. The panel data analysis indicates a higher convergence … Show more

“…Research and innovation are the keys to technological change at national and global levels, but technological change is relative and uneven. Some countries are changing technologically and economically faster than others, as different sectors within the same country have different rates of change (Serban et al, 2022). There is a new era in knowledge society and global development based on information and knowledge (Serban & Lytras, 2020).…”

“…Yang C. et al (2021) observed strong conditional convergence characteristics of low-carbon innovation in the Chinese manufacturing industry through a conditional convergence model, and examined the effect of economic openness on convergence by incorporating spatial spillover effects into the convergence function [ 17 ]. Erban A. C. et al (2022) examined the convergence in high-technology manufacturing sectors in the EU28 countries, they found that the new EU member states displayed a higher convergence rate than the EU15 countries did [ 18 ]. However, both and convergence testing methods are somewhat biased [ 19 ].…”
