Behind the face of holistic perception: Holistic processing of Gestalt stimuli and faces recruit overlapping perceptual mechanisms

Abstract: Holistic processing, demonstrated by a failure of selective attention to individual parts within stimuli, is often considered a relatively unique feature of the processing of faces and objects of expertise. However, face-like holistic processing has been recently demonstrated for novel line stimuli with salient Gestalt perceptual grouping cues. Further, disrupting such cues within face stimuli disrupts holistic face perception. There is evidence that holistic processing of these gestalt stimuli and faces does … Show more

“…Rather, it is a set of images and impressions that are actively generated by the brain e.g., a misperception of the zero outcome as a negative or positive event that seems to be muted in PTSD patients. Explicitly, whereas an acute stress normatively amplifies an unconscious and holistic (Curby and Moerel, 2019) perception heavily relying on intuitive and habitual elements (Yu, 2016), our findings suggest that chronic stress in the form of PTSD on the contrary favors more rational processing. On a prior study (Hopper et al, 2008), PTSD patients correctly rated lower expectancy from the bad vs. the good spinner.…”

“…This fact has been established by studies in the field of psychology that have attempted to understand perception (e.g. Curby & Moerel, 2019;Dybala et al, 2020;Feldman, 2001;Guberman, 2017;Kałamała et al, 2017;Kimchi, 2000;Peterson & Kimchi, 2013;Tétreault et al, 2020;Wagemans et al, 2012). Both humans and animals use visualisation in their daily life to process information from the environment, which is essential for survival.…”
