Behavioural modelling of a switched reluctance motor drive for aircraft power systems

Abstract: A system-level behavioural modelling technique is described for a switched reluctance motor drive. The model enables simple and efficient analysis or simulation of multiple drive systems such as pumps, actuators and engine starters within a moreelectric network, for example, on-board an aircraft. The behavioural model is based on a power balance analysis. The transfer functions in the model are parameterised from experimental tests on the drive system, resulting in a simple model that only reproduces the avera… Show more

“…Due to its exclusive characteristics such as robust and simple mechanical structure, low maintenance, and high reliability and ability to work in harsh environments, Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) can be considered as an excellent choice for various industrial applications [1][2][3][4]. Non-use of winding and permanent magnet in the rotor/translator structure has made it possible to achieve a high speed while the total weight of the motor is also reduced.…”

“…Owing to the numerous advantages of the switched reluctance motor (SRM) such as rugged motor construction, high reliability, low production cost, good torque-speed characteristic, appropriate operation at high-temperature large-speed conditions and simple winding configuration [1,2], this motor could be considered as a strong competitor for permanent magnet (PM) motor or induction motor (IM) in some applications especially military and automotive industries [3][4][5]. The PM brushless dc motors are usually utilised as high-efficiency motors for electric vehicle (EV) and household electrical appliances.…”

“…SRMs have a simple structure due to the absence of magnets and rotor windings [1]. These advantages make the SRM a strong candidate for transportation applications such as electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles [2], and more electric aircrafts (MEAs) [3]. On the other hand, SRMs suffer from high torque ripple and radial magnetic forces which result in high acoustic noise and vibrations, in addition to the complex control strategies due to the highly non-linear inductance profile.…”
