Behavioral Regulation Assessment in Exercise: Exploring an Autonomous and Controlled Motivation Index

Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire (BREQ-2) and to test the hypothesis that the different types of behavioral regulation can be combined on a single factor to assess autonomous and controlled motivation. Data were collected from 550 members of private fitness centres who ranged in age from 14 to 69 years. The analysis supported an 18-item, 5-factor model after excluding one item (S-Bχ2 = 221.… Show more

“…Previous studies have supported the construct validity of the Portuguese versions of PASECQ, BPNES, and BREQ-3 in Brazil, allowing its use in the subsequent statistical analysis (Cid, Moutao, Leitao, & Alves, 2012;Klain et al, 2015).…”

“…Low loadings may thus stem from inability to capture the meaning of the item. Arguments have been made by other researchers for exclusion of this particular item from the model [24,25]. The sample size of the current study is too small for thorough investigation of the factor structure, and because the item in this case actually loaded on its intended factor, we decided to keep all 19 items in the calculation of the composite score.…”
