The present study investigated the motivational factors, behavioral regulations based on self-determination theory framework, and the relationships between basic psychological need satisfaction and actual exercise behaviors of CrossFit and resistance training (RT) participants. A total of 493 subjects (males = 351, females = 148), RT (n = 365, 279 males, 86 females) and Cross-Fit (n = 128, 69 males, 59 females) completed an online questionnaire. Results indicated that CrossFit participants presented higher levels of enjoyment, stress management, social recognition, affiliation, competition, and weight management. Conversely, RT participants reported higher motive for appearance. Intrinsic motivation to exercise was significantly higher in CrossFit, whereas RT participants scored higher controlled motivation. There was no significant difference between weekly exercise volume between groups; therefore, correlation and mediation analysis were conducted with pooled data. Autonomy and competence were significantly associated with more autonomous forms of motivation. Exercise frequency and weekly exercise volume were positively related to intrinsic motivation. When examining the mediating model, competence and intrinsic motivation were found to mediate the relationship between enjoyment and weekly exercise volume. Our results support the relationship among psychological needs satisfaction, intrinsic motivation, and exercise behavior in CrossFit and RT participants. Exercise professionals can encourage individuals to seek self-determined and personally meaningful exercise benefits to promote long-term exercise adherence in fitness centers.

Imagery é um processo cognitivo que pode desempenhar um papel importante no planeamento e execução de movimentos ou ações. Vários instrumentos têm sido desenvolvidos com o intuito de avaliar a habilidade de Imagery no desporto. No entanto, nenhum se focou na modalidade cinestésica, visual interna e visual externa. O objetivo deste estudo foi traduzir e validar preliminarmente para a população desportiva portuguesa o Movement Imagery Questionnaire-3, determinando as suas qualidades psicométricas iniciais através de uma análise fatorial exploratória do modelo que a suporta. A amostra foi constituída por 176 sujeitos (N = 176) (sexo masculino N = 134; sexo feminino N = 42) com uma média de idades de 20.08 anos (SD = 5.94), composta por atletas de futebol (N = 113), basquetebol (N = 43) e ténis (N = 20). Numa primeira fase verificou-se que os procedimentos de tradução e adaptação originaram uma versão Portuguesa do MIQ-3 semelhante à versão original. Numa segunda fase verificamos que as qualidades psicométricas comprovam a adequação da adaptação efetuada, demonstrando que a sua estrutura fatorial é igual à versão original (12 itens agrupados em 3 fatores, com 4 itens cada fator), apresentando índices bastante aceitáveis de validade e fiabilidade (alfa de Cronbach: 0.88 para MIQ-3, 0.79 para as três modalidades), concluindo que este questionário poderá ser utilizado para avaliar a capacidade de Imagery em atletas Portugueses.

The relationship between fitness and health-related quality of life and the mediating role of self-determined motivation in overweight adolescentsAim: To examine the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among overweight adolescents and to test whether this relationship is mediated by body image (BI) and self-determined motivation for physical activity (PA) and exercise. Methods: 120 adolescents identified as overweight or obese were recruited through the school health service. The participants completed self-report instruments measuring HRQoL, BI and self-determined motivation for physical activity and exercise in addition to a 20-m shuttle-run test, and body mass index was calculated. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to evaluate the hypothesized fivedimensional structure of the Behavioural regulation in exercise questionnaire-2 (BREQ-2) used to measure self-determined motivation. Associations between the study variables were explored using univariate linear regression. Mediation was tested by a multistage regression approach. Results: The five-dimensional model of BREQ-2 showed acceptable fit for the data. We revealed a statistically significant association between cardiorespiratory fitness and HRQoL (4.16 [0.3-8.02]; p <0.05). CRF failed to affect BI in the first mediation equation, hence body image was excluded from further analyses. However, self-determined motivation proved to mediate the relationship between CRF and HRQoL. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the motivational mechanisms related to fitness can contribute to explain the association between CRF and HRQoL in adolescents with overweight. The findings are important from a public health point of view and should be taken into account in the development of PA-interventions for adolescents with overweight and obesity for the potential enhancement of their physical and psychosocial well-being.
