Abstract: Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was examined over well-defined and uniform, Pt-Ni, Pt-Zn and Pt-Cu alloyed nanocrystals (NCs) supported on carbon, at 33 bar and between 160 and 200 °C. Pt-Ni alloy catalysts were prepared in three different Pt:Ni ratios, Pt6Ni, Pt3Ni, and PtNi. While all of the Pt-Ni alloys were more selective for producing 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) than were Pt or Ni monometallic catalysts, the Pt3Ni catalyst was superior to the other compositions, exhibiting a yield of… Show more

“…Notably,S chüth and co-workersr eported that PtÀCo bimetallic nanoparticles could be used as highly efficient catalyst for the HDO of HMF to DMF in butanol. [29] Dumesic and co-workers reported that DMF could be produced with 46 %y ield by hydrogenolysis of HMF in the presence of lactones using aR u ÀSn/C catalyst at 200 8C. Subsequently,G orte and co-workersf urthere xplored the mechanism for this high selectivity.…”

“…In addition, PtÀNi, PtÀZn and PtÀCu alloyedn anocrystals have also been demonstrated to be effective catalystsf or the HDO of HMF with 98 %D MF yield. [29] Dumesic and co-workers reported that DMF could be produced with 46 %y ield by hydrogenolysis of HMF in the presence of lactones using aR u ÀSn/C catalyst at 200 8C. [30] Abu-Omar and co-workers reported that ab imetallicc atalystc ontainingL ewis-acidic Zn II and Pd/C components was effective for the HDO of HMF to DMF with high conversion (99 %) and selectivity (85 %).…”

“…In a continuing effort, the same group studied bimetallic nanocrystals supported on carbon, such as Pt 3 Ni/C and Pt 2 Zn/C. Upon optimization, 2,5‐DMF ( 226 ) was obtained in 98 % yield . Other catalysts, such as Pt 3 Co 2 /C, were also successfully utilized in flow, giving 226 in 98 % yield over long periods of operation .…”

“…The same group extended the application to other base metals (such as Ni, Cu, and Zn) along with Pt and studied the composition dependent HDO activity of the catalysts. 95 Ebitani et al reported a carbon supported PdAu bimetallic catalyst (Pd x Au y /C) for the selective hydrogenation of HMF to DMF. 96 The bimetallic Pd x Au y /C catalyst exhibited significantly higher activity as compared to monometallic Pd/C and Au/C catalysts due to the existence of a charge transfer phenomenon from Pd to Au atoms as proved by XPS and X-ray absorption nearedge structure (XANES) analyses.…”
