Abstract: Mammography is the best exam for early diagnosis of breast cancer. Developing countries frequently have a low income of mammography and absence of organized screening. The knowledge of vulnerable population and strategies to increase adherence are important to improve the implementation of an organized breast-screening program. A mammography regional-screening program was implemented in a place around 54.238 women, aged 40-69 years old. It was proposed to perform biannual mammography free of cost for the women… Show more

“…Recent Brazilian literature about early breast cancer detection is mainly focused on women's knowledge about prevention and mammography performance (Santos and Chubaci, 2011;Azevedo et al, 2012;Schneider et al, 2013;Vieira et al, 2015). Few Brazilian studies have assessed women's knowledge about BSE and underlying reasons for its performance: Most descriptive Brazilian studies about BSE, that mainly focused on intervention including small groups of women, have been conducted in southern regions of the country (Nascimento et al, 2009;Araujo et al, 2010;Kim et al, 2010;Grego et al, 2011;Silva and Riul, 2011;Gomes et al, 2012).…”

“…[11][12][13][14] Despite the control of breast cancer having been included among the priorities of the Brazilian Health Pact, 15 the estimated mammography coverage obtained via household surveys shows insufficient and unequal screening in Brazilian regions. 12,16,17 In a country as heterogenous as Brazil, regional studies can demonstrate variations in the determinant factors of mammography adherence, propitiating adjustments to preventive strategies in accordance with local characteristics. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of the use of mammographic screening and the factors related to non--adherence in Boa Vista, the capital of the state of Roraima, in the Brazilian Amazon area.…”

“…There is no organized mammographic screening, only isolated experiments. [3][4][5] When assessing the barriers related to mammography screening, they can be synthetically divided into those related to the health system, those related to education or knowledge, and those related to adherence or attitude. 6 In Brazil, there are innumerous factors related to adherence/attitude, including age, socioeconomic condition and formal education.…”

“…The education/knowledge category includes the factors described above, associated with the fact that mammography is not often indicated by physicians, and patients do not seek tests when they do not present symptoms or if they fear pain or cancer. 5 Barriers related to the health system are difficult to assess as there is no specific indicator. Thus, a critical evaluation of the barriers related to the health system, which impact on the screening of breast cancer, is justified.…”
