Barriers and facilitators of nutrition assessment, counseling, and support for tuberculosis patients: a qualitative study

Abstract: Background Nutrition has a substantial role in the prevention, treatment, and cure of tuberculosis. Thus, nutrition assessment, counseling, and support (NACS) have been implemented as part of tuberculosis treatment. However, evidence on the barriers and facilitators (enablers) of its implementation is lacking. Objective To explore barriers and facilitators of implementation of NACS for tuberculosis patients. Methods … Show more

“…[35][36][37][38][39][40] While nutrition-specific interventions have been implemented in LMIC as part of TB treatment since 2013, there seem to be several patient-, facility-, and health system-level barriers that influence the uptake of these interventions given we see low BMI persist among those with TB in our study. 41,42 Longterm, sustainable, systemic changes affecting social determinants of health, such as food assistance in food insecure settings, access to social services, and health systems 41 While nutritional supplementation may be helpful in TB risk reduction, more empirical evidence is needed to assess the efficacy of nutrition on TB acquisition and recovery. [43][44][45] Among all cases with prevalent TB identified at enrollment, 66% were bacterially confirmed and 34% identified by their receipt of combination therapy for active TB.…”

“…Firstly, GeneXpert (cartridge based nucleic acid amplification test), a technique recommended for patients suspected of having either pulmonary or extrapulmonary MTB infection, was not used in this study. Second, although nutrition status has an essential role in combat against TB, 18 we did not perform a nutritional evaluation for our patient. Third, this study did not provide strong evidence suggesting a causal relationship between MTB infection and EnLP.…”

“…Insufficient time allocation for patient care is another issue, with healthcare providers often underutilizing preventive measures. A study was carried out in Ethiopia to explore barriers and facilities for implementing nutrition education assessment and counselling (Degefa et al, 2021). Among the barriers cited was a lack of an adequate workforce.…”
