: Trees can modify the weed seed bank composition and distribution in the cropped area of an agroforestry system. This study aimed at analyzing the eucalyptus (Eucalyptus dunnii) effect on spatial distribution, functional traits abundance and weed seed bank botanic composition in an agroforestry system under no-tillage in Subtropical Brazil. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with five replications, and five positions between 4.5-year-old eucalyptus double rows [(4x3) x 20 m] as treatments. Soil sampling was performed at 0-20 cm and the method to quantify and identify seeds was the seedling emergence in trays, inside a greenhouse. Weed phytosociological indices (relative density, frequency and importance), functional traits abundance (life cycle, shade tolerance, reproduction, spread and seed form) and seed densities (m-2) of families and species were evaluated; 17 weed families and 49 species were found. The indices that contributed to the relative importance of families and species differed among the positions between rows. Eucalyptus grown as an intercrop changed the composition and size of the weed seed bank, in a different way for functional traits, families and species depeding on the distance from trees.

RESUMO A avaliação de aspectos ecológicos é importante para a compreensão da dinâmica e funcionamento dos agroecossistemas. O estudo avaliou a chuva e banco de sementes no solo de dois agroecossistemas localizados na região do Baixo Amazonas, oeste paraense. Para avaliar a chuva de sementes nas áreas de estudo, foram realizadas coletas mensais, durante 12 meses, com o uso de coletores de madeiras (11 na área de vegetação secundária e 08 no sistema agroflorestal). Os diásporos foram separados, identificados e contados. Para a avaliação do banco de sementes, foram coletadas 50 amostras de solo de 0,5 x 0,5 m (0,25 m 2) na profundidade de 0-5 cm, em cada área. O material coletado foi acondicionado em saco de papel e levado para casa de vegetação. As amostras do solo foram colocadas nas bandejas sendo irrigadas diariamente. A contagem e identificação das espécies foram realizadas em intervalos de 30 a 40 dias. Nos dois agroecossistemas analisados foram identificadas 22 espécies de propágulos distribuídas em 15 famílias. As espécies de propágulos mais abundantes no período avaliado foram Centrosema brasilianum (L.) Benth., Chamaecrista sp. e Lonchocarpus spruceanus Benth. Os bancos de sementes dos agroecossistemas estudados apresentaram baixa similaridade entre si e predomínio de espécies herbáceas e lianas. The seed bank is directly related to forest resilience because it contributes to the greatest number of regenerants after the occurrence of disturbances. Changes in seed density, floristic composition, and life forms completely alter the successional trajectory of forest environments. These changes are directly related to land use. For example, suppression of the seed bank can occur in pastures, that experience frequent fires with increase of density of seeds and predominance of herbs are typical of highly degraded areas, such as Poaceae, Rubiaceae, Asteraceae, and Cyperaceae. Melastomataceae seedlings are an important component of the seed bank in the Amazon rainforest. On the other hand, Urticaceae has greater representation in forests that exhibit low-impact land use. Any change in seed bank functionality is bound to compromise the diversity, regeneration potential and overall maintenance of tropical forests. Therefore, it is necessary to expand studies that investigate seed banks in the Amazon rainforest. It is as important to prioritize sampling methods and pursue standardization of data presentation, as well as improve the identification of species that occur in the seed bank.
