Azimuth Null-Reduced Radiation Pattern, Ultralow Profile, Dual-Wideband and Low Passive Intermodulation Ceiling Mount Antenna for Long Term Evolution Application

Abstract: An ultralow profile, dual-wideband and low passive intermodulation (PIM) in-building ceilingmount antenna for long term evolution (LTE) distributed antenna system (DAS) application is presented. The proposed antenna was designed based on asymmetrical dipole concept having a ground plane with an inclined feeding edge to achieve wideband characteristic and reduced null radiation pattern in the azimuth plane when oriented horizontally. Various dipole and monopole design approaches are presented to give an insight… Show more

“…The throughput values will determine the performance quality of the drone while flying using an LTE mobile network. The most important value that must meet the requirement as suggested by 3GPP in Release-15 [ 18 ] is the uplink throughput, since the drone is required to stream a live feed video from the drone to the ground station. This application will require a high bandwidth due to the size of the video itself.…”

“…Due to the high probability of line-of-sight (LoS) link in higher altitudes, drone communications suffer from both uplink and downlink interferences [ 17 ]. Moreover, terrestrial network planning is optimized for ground UEs, and BS antennas are tilted downwards to prevent inter-cell interference and provide service for ground UEs via antennas’ main lobes [ 18 ]. Meanwhile, drones that fly above the BSs are served by the antennas’ sidelobes, which cause severe challenges for interference and mobility management [ 11 ].…”

“…When components for the system are built from scratch, it is certainly wise to adhere to well-established practices of low-PIM design. Weak passive non-linearities can arise from a wide range of phenomena such as metal to metal junctions [21], conductor surface roughness [22], coaxial connector type [23], connector torque or contact pressure [24], electro-thermal heating effects [25], and unsuitable galvanic surface finishes containing ferromagnetic nickel as a diffusion barrier [26], such as ENIG.…”

“…The antenna is one of the most important components in wireless communication systems, and is also one of the components that could most easily be a source of PIM [10][11][12][13]. The design of antennas is highly related to the structure, and therefore structural design and processing technology are the key to controlling the PIM levels of antennas.…”
