Introduction: The second most frequent form of cancer in males and the main reason for cancer-related deaths worldwide is prostate cancer (PC). Despite being less common than in Western nations, PC incidence and death rates have been rising throughout South Asia. This study intends to evaluate how well-informed and knowledgeable the South Asian public is about PC, its symptoms, and screening procedures among men and women. Methods: From August to September of 2022, a cross-sectional survey was carried out throughout South Asia. Participants in the research had to be at least 24 years old, and it used a practical sampling approach. A self-created questionnaire with both closed- and open-ended questions was used to gather the data. SPSS was used to conduct statistical analysis, including χ 2 tests for relationships. Results: A total of 378 individuals, comprising 57.6% men and 41.8% women, were involved in the study. Only 45.0% of participants were aware of prostate specific antigen testing for early PC diagnosis, however, 81.7% of people recognized what the prostate gland was. Approximately 87% of individuals had never received a screening for PC. Compared to males, women showed a stronger understanding of PC and its screening techniques. Notably, 94.7% believed the likelihood of effective therapy was increased by early identification. Conclusion: While women demonstrated better levels of knowledge, the study’s findings show that the general population in South Asia suffers from a serious shortage of reliable knowledge concerning PC. To promote early identification, lower morbidity, and enhance treatment success, awareness-raising and educational initiatives are essential, with a focus on both sexes. This study establishes the foundation for future research and emphasizes the necessity for targeted educational programmes in the area.

Frequency and Trends of Prostatic Diseases in a Subset of Karachi Population: A Retrospective Study

Background: Prostatic diseases are a leading cause of frequent urinary complaints in elderly males. The most common diseases include prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and prostate cancer. This study aimed to determine the frequency of the prostatic diseases, their trend over the years, and the association of age and diagnosis. Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted in Basic Medical Sciences Institute (BMSI) at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi. Data was collected from the histopathological files and all the cases diagnosed from 2014 to 2018 were included. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS with 95% confidence interval and p-value of ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. The Chi-square test was applied to find the association with age and year of diagnosis. Results: Total 163 prostate cases were documented from 2014 to 2018, out of which 98 (60.1%) were of benign prostatic hyperplasia, which was most commonly diagnosed in men aged, 61-70. Prostatic adenocarcinomas having Gleason scores 8-10 were frequent and commonly seen in men aged 51-60 years. An increasing trend (p-value=0.053) was observed in the diagnosis of these prostatic diseases within these five years. Conclusion: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is the most frequently (p-value=0.140) diagnosed prostatic disease in men, followed by adenocarcinoma and prostatitis. Advanced stage prostatic adenocarcinoma was diagnosed more frequently 17(10.4%) and at an earlier age. There is an increase in the number (p-value=0.053) of cases of prostatic diseases diagnosed each year. National-level studies and health policies are needed to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment.

Background: Morbidity and mortality associated with cancer significantly contribute to the increasing non-communicable disease burden. Cancer affects populations across the lifespan but its diagnosis is disproportionately higher in later years of life. The Sub-Saharan Africa region, Kenya included has a high incidence of prostate cancer. Meru County has significantly contributed to the rising incidences of cancer including cancer of the prostate (19.4%). The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge level of PCa among men with UTIs and determine the associated factors. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional survey sixty-five men with UTIs were purposively sampled at Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital, outpatient department. A semi-structured researcher-administered questionnaire was used to capture participant demographic data, anthropometric details and knowledge of PCa. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package of Social Sciences (v.27) and was presented in tables and graphs. Results: The mean age of the participants was 61.8(±13.5). The majority were married (73.8%) and most were living in rural parts of Meru County (72.3%). Almost 2/3 had primary education and above (64.6%). There were more Christian participants (83.1%). History of BPH and PCa was reported by 43.1% and 32.3% of the participants respectively. The highly and recognized risk factors were older age and use of alcohol and tobacco (87.7%). The highly recognized signs and symptoms for PCa were incomplete emptying of the bladder (96.9%). Participants had high knowledge of PCa risk factors (68.9%) and signs and symptoms (82.7%). In general, participants had high knowledge of PCa (69.2%), a mean score of 76.6 % (±17.23) and a range of 27-100. The knowledge level of PCa was associated with the level of education [((1, χ2n=65) = 6.532, p = 0.038] although it was not a significant predictor. Conclusion and Recommendation: Men ≥40 years with UTIs are highly knowledgeable about PCa risk factors and signs and symptoms. There is a need to establish if the high knowledge translates to the prevention of the disease. Key words: Knowledge; prostate cancer; Urinary Tract Infections; Kenya
