The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical and histopathological aspects of topical application of almescar (Protium heptaphyllum (Aubl.) Marchand) oil resin on the healing processes of experimentally induced wounds in rats (Rattus norvegicus). Male rats (n=16) were randomly distributed into two experimental groups: group treated with almescar oil resin at 0.5% in isotonic solution (GO, n=8) and control group (CG, n=8). The experimental lesions were treated daily for 30 days. Macroscopic and histopathological analyses were performed on days 3, 7, 14 and 21, respectively. A wound contraction of 94.77% was recorded for GO and 93.91% 21 days after the lesion. The chemical constituents identified in the essential oil were predominantly monoterpenes, α-terpinolene (32.7%), limonene (22.0%) and 3-carene (15.0%) were identified as major components. Wounds in both groups had a significant reduction in the wound area during the trial period (p <.0001). Comparing the groups in different stages of evaluation, there were significant differences on day 3 (p = 0.0268), day 7 (p = 0.0031) and day 14 (p = .0190). In conclusion, the topical application of almescar resin oil was beneficial in the healing process of experimentally induced skin wounds in rats, making it a therapeutic option in veterinary medicine.Keywords: Almescar, Healing, Phytotherapy, Rats, Wounds. ResumoO objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os aspectos clínicos e histopatológicos da aplicação tópica do óleo da resina do alméscar (Protium heptaphyllum (Aubl.) Marchand) no processo de cicatrização de feridas cutâneas induzidas experimentalmente em ratos (Rattus norvegicus). Ratos machos (n=16) foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em dois grupos experimentais: grupo tratado com resina de óleo alméscar em 0,5% em solução isotônica (GO, n=8) e grupo controle (GC, n=8). As lesões experimentais foram tratadas diariamente durante 30 dias. Análises macroscópicas e histopatológicas foram realizadas nos dias 3, 7, 14 e 21. Grau de contração de 94,77% foi registrada no grupo tratado com o óleo de resina e de 93,91% para as feridas controle após 21 dias de tratamento. Os constituintes químicos identificados no óleo essencial foram predominantemente monoterpenos, entre estes, α -terpinoleno (32,7%), limoneno (22%) e 3-careno (15%) em sua maioria. As feridas de ambos os grupos tiveram uma redução significativa na área durante o período experimental (p<0,0001). Comparando-se os grupos em diferentes etapas de avaliação, houve diferença significativa no dia 3 (p=0,0268), dia 7 (p=0,0031) e dia 14 (p=0,0190). Em conclusão, a aplicação tópica de óleo de resina alméscar foi benéfica no processo de cicatrização de feridas cutâneas induzidas experimentalmente em ratos, tornandose uma opção terapêutica em medicina veterinária.

Bras. 33(5): 674-682, maio 2013 674 RESUMO.-Considerando-se a falta de informações detalhadas sobre a morfologia da paca, sendo o segundo maior roedor da fauna brasileira, de excelente qualidade de carne e, dada a importância do tegumento comum, inclusive para o bom manejo em cativeiro, e até mesmo estudos como uma opção de animal de experimentação, descreveu-se a morfologia, morfometria e a ultraestrutura da pele de oito pacas Considering the lack of detailed information about the morphology of paca, which is the second largest rodent of Brazilian's fauna, with excellent meat quality and, due to the importance of the common integument, we described the morphology, ultrastructure and morphometry of the skin of eight pacas (Cuniculus paca), males and females, through comparative analysis of skin's segments of the cervical, dorsal and medial carpal portions. Macroscopic characteristics of the coat were studied. Part of the segments of cutaneous regions was analyzed by light microscopy, and the other part by scanning electron microscopy. We measured the thickness of dermis, epidermis, stratum corneum, the profiles of the collagen fibers of reticular dermis and the area of filled sebaceous gland cells. The results were analyzed by descriptive statistics and "T" test (p<0.001). The color of the coat is reddish brown with bristles arranged in groups. The architecture of the skin and skin appendages resembles those of mammals in general, although there are no sweat glands. According to the morphometric analysis, this study shows differences of the skin architecture between male and female pacas and also between various body regions in the same animal.

RESUMO:O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a ação cicatrizante do extrato hidroetanólico de folhas de Tropaeolum majus em lesões cutâneas em ratos. Para isso foram utilizados 15 ratos Wistar distribuídos em 3 grupos denominados de G7, G14 e G21, de acordo com o período de observação em 7, 14 e 21 dias após o procedimento cirúrgico. Na região dorsal de cada animal foram realizadas duas feridas de 1 cm de diâmetro, sendo a da esquerda tratada com gel base de Carbopol, e a da direita com gel de Tropaeolum majus. Os tratamentos nas lesões ocorreram diariamente nos períodos citados. Realizou-se estudo comparativo entre os dois grupos por meio da análise micro e macroscópica. Observou-se formação de crosta em todas as feridas até o sétimo dia. Na avaliação histológica, as lesões tratadas com o extrato de Tropaeolum majus apresentaram uma menor quantidade de infiltrado inflamatório e de proliferação fibloblástica com relação às lesões tratadas com o gel base e uma maior colageneização bem como mais acentuada angiogênese no 7º, 14º e 21º dia do pós-operatório. Conclui-se que o extrato hidroetanólico de folhas de Tropaeolum majus promoveu melhora do processo de cicatrização por aumento da formação de neovasos e colageneização. INFLUENCE OF HYDROETHANOLIC EXTRACT FROM THE LEAVES OF Tropaeolum majus FOR TISSUE RESTORATION OF SKIN LESIONS ABSTRACT:The healing activity of the hydroethanolic extract of Tropaeolum majus leaves on rats´ skin lesions is provided. Fifteen Wistar rats were used, distributed in three groups, G7, G14 and G21, according to observation period 7, 14 and 21 days after surgery. Two wounds, diameter 1 cm, on the dorsal region of each animal, were treated with Carbopol gel on the left side and by Tropaeolum majus on the right side. Lesions were treated daily during the periods above. A comparative study was undertaken between the two groups by microand macroscopy. The formation of a wound scab on all wounds up to the seventh day was observed. Histological assessment revealed that lesions treated with Tropaeolum majus extract had a lower inflammatory infiltrate rate and fibroblastic proliferation when compared to lesions treated with gel, coupled to a greater collagenization and deeper angiogenesis on the 7 th , 14 th and 21 st day after surgery. Results showed that hydroethanolic extract of Tropaeolum majus leaves caused a better improvement in the healing process through the increase in the formation of neo-vases and collagenization.

Abstract: Although with histologic aspects favoring the Jatropha, no significant differences concerning to the macroscopic and microscopic aspects were observed among the skin wounds receiving raw extract Jatropha and those that received no treatment in the final evaluation.
