Introduction: Speech disorders may impair the construction of phonemegrapheme association and affect decoding and reading fluency. Purpose: To describe the performance profiles of schoolchildren diagnosed with reading disorder (RD) and with reading disorder associated with phonological disorder (PD) in the task of reading of isolated items according to the psycholinguistic characteristics of such items. Methods: The medical records of 36 schoolchildren enrolled at the 4 th and 5 th grades of elementary school were analyzed as follows: 18 children with RD were paired with other 18 children with typical development according to age, schooling, and gender. The study sample was divided into four groups: Study Group 1 (SG1), composed of 10 schoolchildren with RD; Study Group 2 (SG2), comprising eight schoolchildren with RD and PD; Control Group paired with SG1 (CG1); and CG paired with SG2 (CG2). The reading of words and pseudo words was compared with respect to orthographic regularity, frequency, and extension. The data were statistically analyzed. Results: Lower values of rate and accuracy were observed in the study groups compared with those of the control groups, except for the rate of pseudo words in SG2. The study groups showed lower statistical results than the control groups for all regularity variables, except for irregular words. SG1 and CG1 presented similar performance in the reading of monosyllabic and polysyllabic words. Regarding trisyllabic and dissyllable words, significantly lower mean values were found in SG1 compared with those of CG1; however, SG2 showed significantly lower performance regardless of item extension. Performance of the study groups with respect to item familiarity was significantly lower for all variables, except for high frequency. Conclusion: Children with RD present good use of the lexical route and difficulty with the phonological route. Phonological speech disorder impairs the performance of schoolchildren on both reading routes.

ResumoO estudo avalia a interferência de fatores sociais, individuais e lingüísticos no desempenho de leitura em voz alta de 333 crianças de Belo Horizonte cursando 1ª a 4ª série do Ensino Fundamental. Medidas de tempo de reação e precisão foram coletadas. Uma análise de regressão hierárquica (método de Estimação de Equação Generalizada) mostrou a existência dos efeitos de regularidade grafema-fonema e fonemagrafema na leitura e um impacto do número de categorias de regularidade utilizadas na emergência desse efeito. Dos fatores sociais, apenas a escolaridade da mãe foi importante para a precisão (na direção inversa à esperada). Não houve efeito de gênero. Outros fatores além dos tradicionais também mostraramse relevantes, como a idade de aquisição da leitura e a compreensão verbal. O estudo contribuiu com questões teóricas relevantes para a avaliação cognitiva da leitura no português. Palavras-chave: Leitura; Efeito de regularidade; Categorias de regularidade; Fatores sociais. AbstractThis study evaluates social, individual and linguistic factors in the performance of a single-word reading aloud task. A group of 1 st to 4 th grade school children from Belo Horizonte-MG (N = 333) read aloud 323 single words presented in a computer screen. Measures of reaction time (RT) and error scores were collected. The Generalized Estimating Equations method exhibited the grapheme-phoneme and phoneme-grapheme regularity effect in reading and also showed an impact on the number of categories of regularity in this effect. No social factor was important to explain the results, but their mothers' education was correlated to the error scores (in opposite direction). There was no gender effect. Other factors rather than the traditional ones were also relevant, such as the age of reading acquisition and the verbal comprehension. The work brings important theoretical issues to cognitive reading assessment in Brazil.

Resumo A presente revisão de literatura busca apresentar as principais conclusões dos estudos conduzidos na área de reconhecimento de palavras com crianças falantes do português e levantar os pontos teóricos e metodológicos que ainda merecem atenção dos pesquisadores. A ênfase do trabalho recai sobre a tarefa de leitura em voz alta de palavras isoladas feita por crianças em fase de aquisição da leitura. Três grandes conclusões foram tiradas: (a) os diversos estudos em língua portuguesa confirmam, de maneira geral, os postulados do modelo de dupla-rota da leitura; (b) as crianças falantes do português parecem utilizar preferencialmente a estratégia fonológica no início da aprendizagem da leitura, a qual vai sendo gradualmente substituída pelo uso prioritário da estratégia lexical; e (c) questões metodológicas têm interferido nos resultados encontrados pelos diferentes pesquisadores, as quais se relacionam à forma de aplicação da tarefa de leitura, ao tipo de análise estatística utilizada e à direção (do ponto de vista da leitura ou da escrita) e ao número de categorias consideradas na classificação de regularidade das palavras. AbstractThe present work attempts to review the main conclusions of the studies carried out in the area of word recognition with Portuguese speaking children and to raise theoretical and methodological issues that still require the attention of researchers. The emphasis of this work is centered on the word reading aloud task performed by children in the process of reading acquisition. Three major conclusions were derived from the review: (a) generally, the collection of studies in Portuguese language confirm the assumptions of the dual-route model of word recognition; (b) Portuguese speaking children seem to prefer to use the phonological strategy in the beginning of the reading process, which is then gradually substituted by the preferential use of the lexical strategy; and (c) methodological issues have interfered in the results found by different researchers, and these are related to the manner of application of the reading task, the type of statistical analysis carried out and to the direction (from the reading or spelling standpoint) and number of categories considered in the classification of regularity of the words.
