Available fluoride in toothpastes used by Brazilian children

Abstract: Toothpastes should have a minimum concentration of 1000 ppm of fluoride (F) to control caries and also the active F agent must be chemically free (soluble) in the formulation. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the concentration of soluble F in dentifrices used by 206 Brazilian children. The concentrations of total fluoride (TF), total soluble fluoride (TSF) and fluoride ion were determined. From these analyses, the concentrations of F as sodium monofluorophosphate (MFP) and % of insoluble F were calc… Show more

“…One of its most common uses is in fluoride dentifrice, considered one of the products with the greatest cariostatic effect when used daily 3,4 . For this reason, the fluoride must be chemically free in its formulation, ensuring its bio-availability in the oral cavity during and after brushing 5 .…”

“…However, care must be taken, since excessive exposure to fluoride by water consumption combined with other fluoride sources may result in undesirable effects, such as dental fluorosis (7)(8)(9). To achieve the expected results with this preventive method, a strict control of the process of water fluoridation is required, avoiding the undesirable effects of over-dosage, as well as avoiding underdosage, which does not offer the maximum benefits (2).…”
