Background In medicine and dentistry, 3D technology allows the virtual planning and printing of surgical replicas of anatomical structures that can facilitate certain transplant procedures. In dentistry, 3D technology is useful in autogenous tooth transplantation. Case presentation We present a clinical case of an ectopic mandibular second premolar, describing the preoperative planning with dental replicas and the autotransplantation surgery. 3D prints of the surgical replica of the tooth to be transplanted was made using an Objet30 Prime® Printer, PolyJet. Clinical controls performed at 3, 6 and 12 months indicated the satisfactory evolution of the transplanted tooth. Conclusion 3D additive manufacturing technology allows the preparation of a new recipient socket with the aid of a surgical replica of the tooth to be transplanted, thus minimizing handling and extraoral time.

A supernumerary nonfunctional tooth such as a mesiodens can be successfully used to replace a missing permanent tooth by autotransplantation. Autotransplantation has a high success rate if case selection is good, appropriate surgery is carried out and excellent hygiene is maintained. Autotransplantation should be considered as one of the most biologic techniques for replacing a missing tooth with minimal cost. Autotransplantation can be carried out even after complete root formation in the donor tooth.

Supernumerary teeth are dental anomalies of number that VARIACIONES CLÍNICAS DE LOS MESODIENTES DOBLES: REVISIÓN Y REPORTE DE CASOS CLINICAL VARIATIONS OF DOUBLE MESIODENS: A REVIEW AND CASE REPORT INTRODUCCIÓNUn supernumerario es un diente adicional a la formula dentaria normal, ya sea en la dentición primaria o en la dentición permanente. Su presencia puede estar asociada con maloclusiones, alteraciones de la erupción, diastemas y apiñamiento, entre otros. 1-3La prevalencia de dientes supernumerarios varía entre 0,5 y 3,8 % para la dentición permanente, y entre el 0,35 y el 0,8 % para la dentición primaria. [4][5][6] No siempre que hay un diente supernumerario en la dentición decidua se da el mismo caso en la dentición permanente. Los dientes supernumerarios pueden ubicarse en cualquier lugar de los maxilares, pero los sitios más frecuentes son en el maxilar superior, en la línea media hacia palatino y en la región premolar de la mandíbula.5-8 Los mesodientes representan entre el 50-83% de todos los dientes supernumerarios. En la dentición permanente se ha reportado una incidencia de los mesodientes de 0,15 a 3,8%, 9-12 con un riesgo de ocurrencia dos veces mayor en hombres que en mujeres. 13Existen diversas teorías acerca de la etiología de los dientes supernumerarios, sin embargo, hasta ahora su origen es desconocido. La primera teoría es la del Atavismo, que consiste en explicar los supernumerarios como una expresión de un rasgo de nuestros ancestros simiescos, los cuales poseían un número mayor de dientes.1, 14 La segunda es la de la división anómala del germen dental (dicotomía). La tercera es la teoría de la hiperactividad de la lámina dentaria, que consiste en la alteración del crecimiento más una hiperactividad focal localizada de la lámina dentaria. Esta es la teoría más ampliamente aceptada para el desarrollo de dientes supernumerarios; [15][16][17][18] sin embargo, también se atribuye a factores como la herencia y tendencia familiar y a algunos factores del medio ambiente. 15,19 El diente supernumerario más común en el arco superior es el meso diente, el cual está presente en la línea media de la maxila entre los dos incisivos centrales. 9,20 Los mesodientes pueden ser únicos o múltiples, se puede dar con presencia de otros supernumerarios y pueden haber o no manifestaciones patológicas. [21][22][23][24]
