Self-medication is one of the main public health problems that has been growing in Brazil and in the world in recent years. Thus, the present study aims to verify and evaluate self-medication in public health in Brazil, its risk factors and the role of the pharmacist in the multidisciplinary team as an advisor in the rational use of medications. A bibliographic review was carried out using SciELO and Google Scholar databases with the intention of collecting data on the numbers of registered cases and deaths. According to the reviewed literature, self-medication in Brazil is linked to several factors. Among them, it can be highlighted the excessive advertising and easy access to medications in pharmacies. Moreover, the analysis pointed out that 77% of the population adhere to this practice; males represent about 40% of the cases. The indiscriminate use of these drugs and their associations can cause several adverse effects and intoxications that can lead the patient to death. According to the National Toxic-Pharmacological Information System (SINITOX) (SINITOX-Sistema Nacional de Informações Tóxico-Farmacológicas), only in 2017, about 27.11% of the registered intoxications were caused by medications, with 20,637 cases e 50 deaths. One way of controlling self-medication is the humanization of health services, especially in the public network. Therefore, The Federal Pharmacy Council (Conselho Federal de Farmácia-CFF) implemented the Resolution 586 on August 29 th , 2013, a guideline about the prescription of overthe-counter medications. In this context, the pharmacist has great relevance as an advisor and health agent. This professional collaborates for the rational use of medicines and the reduction of selfmedication cases. Finally, pharmaceutical assistance projects intended to guide the correct use of medicines would be of paramount importance to the population, thus reducing public health problems, mainly related to self-medication.

Objetivo: Identificar fatores associados à prática da automedicação em idosos da cidade de Montes Claros/Minas Gerais/Brasil. Métodos: Este estudo tem desenho transversal, descritivo, realizado com idosos entrevistados em drogaria em Montes Claros. Realizaram-se 302 entrevistas coletando aleatoriamente dados como idade, escolaridade, fármacos estocados, condições de armazenamento e frequência da utilização. As informações coletadas foram transferidas para um banco de dados do software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences - SPSS, através do qual foram avaliadas possíveis relações de associação entre as variáveis. Foi utilizado o teste qui-quadrado para investigar a existência de associações entre as variáveis independentes. Resultados: 92,4% realizam automedicação e 97,66 % deles faz uso de algum medicamento diariamente. Houve um predomínio da automedicação na faixa etária de 60 até 66 anos (28,8%) e menor concentração entre 66 e 69 anos (22,8%). As medicações de maior utilização foram os anti-hipertensivos e anti-inflamatórios. Conclusão: Apesar de risco à saúde, a automedicação ocorre frequentemente entre idosos. Este estudo vem enfatizar a necessidade de promoção do uso racional de medicamentos neste segmento populacional.

OBJETIVO: Descrever a prática da automedicação em idosos atendidos na Atenção Básica. MÉTODO: Estudo transversal, descritivo e exploratório realizado com idosos adscritos na Estratégia Saúde da Família (ESF) Mutirão do município de Cocal, Piauí. Foram incluídos idosos com autonomia física e funcional. Os dados foram coletados por meio da aplicação de um questionário contendo dados sociodemográfico e dados relacionados à prática da automedicação. A análise se deu pela estatística descritiva. RESULTADOS: Um total de 35 idosos integraram a amostra, com média de idade 70 (± 6,6) anos e predominância do sexo feminino (65,7%). Verificou-se que 80% dos participantes referiram fazer uso de medicações de maneira regular, 62,8% não receberam informações sobre os perigos da automedicação, 68,6%toma remédios sem prescrição médica e 48,6% usa medicação indicada por vizinho/amigo/parente. Quadros álgicos seguido da gripe/resfriado foram os motivos mais comuns da automedicação. A orientação farmacêutica (74,3%) e ter resolvido o problema de saúde antes da consulta médica (68,6%) estão entre as causas que favoreceram a referida pratica. CONCLUSÃO: Os dados sugerem que a automedicação entre os idosos é comum, principalmente em quadros álgicos e resfriados, e que a dificuldade de acesso à consulta médica, orientação farmacêutica e o desconhecimento dos perigos predispõem a esta prática.
