Automatic Web Procedure for Calculating Flood Flow Frequency

Abstract: The estimated flood flow frequency in a particular cross-section of a riverbed for a given return period is a topic of great interest for its application in hydrological, geomorphological and hydrogeological fields. Nevertheless, to establish a one-to-one relationship between rainfall and peak flow is a difficult problem to solve, due to the great number of factors involved (intensity and distribution of rainfall, hydromorphological characteristics of the watershed, type and distribution of vegetation, soil sa… Show more

“…Many studies have been done on flooding inundation process simulation with simplified models at both the basin and regional scale [3,[12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. Jacobs (2018) developed a flooding inundation modeling tool called Flood Modeller, which simulates the flooding of rivers, floodplains, and urban areas using simplified 1D and 2D hydraulics [19].…”

“…The flow discharge estimation is one of the main challenges in TSP determination; deriving the flow discharge directly using only cross-section location as input is a hard task. In this work, the approach proposed by the Flood Estimation Handbook published by the River Tiber Basin Authority was implemented [14]. Subsequently, the channel gradient was obtained from a DEM using the elevation drop between a cell and the cell upstream at distances of 100 m, 200 m, and 400 m, as proposed by Bizzi and Lerner [12].…”

“…The procedure implemented in a GIS environment [14] starts from the calculation of the upslope catchment area by correctly identifying the outlet point for any given point. The calculation code finds the closest point located in the stream network since the point provided by the user cannot be correctly positioned.…”
