Abstract: In a prospective study series of 167 patients with tube thoracostomy for spontaneous pneumothorax in 1993-1996, 32 patients (age range 16-79 years, mean age 45.5 years) were treated with autologous blood-patch pleurodesis for persistent air leak. In 27 (84%) of cases the air leak ceased within 72 h after the pleurodesis. The duration of air leak was significantly shorter (p < 0.01) than in simple drainage. Empyema developed in three cases, and two patients with failed pleurodesis required open thoracotomy. Min… Show more

“…[916] In these studies the amount of autologous blood ranged between 50 to 250 ml as daily 50 ml injection repeated until success. We used only one single injection of 50 ml of blood in all our cases and obtained the desired effect also described by Dumire et al .…”

“…[8] and Cagirici et al . [16] The reasons for not injecting more than 50 ml of blood included the concerns about injecting an ideal medium for bacteria in the pleural space in addition to the increased risk of bacterial contamination due to repeated manipulation of the drains.…”

“…However, Robinson [10] only managed 84% success with the same treatment in 25 pneumothorax relapse patients. In a total of 167 spontaneous pneumothorax patients, Cagirici et al [1] treated 32 patients with autologous blood, with an 84% success rate. When compared to other patients submitted to simple thoracic drainage (135 patients), air leak loss was significantly less in those submitted to autologous blood (p < 0.01).…”

“…Their origin can be classified as primary spontaneous pneumothorax (without coexisting pulmonary disease) or secondary (associated with underlying pathology) [1]. The latter is very common and difficult to manage.…”

“…It prolongs patient's hospital stay and is considered to be a difficult problem regarding its management [1,2]. Pleurodesis is an excellent method used to treat air leak and it is feasible by means of surgery, autologous blood and several intra-pleural chemical agents such as talc powder, tetracycline, doxycycline, bleomycine ect.…”
