Although radiant cooling is considerably more efficient than conventional all-air room cooling systems, the potential for its application in warm humid regions is limited, owing to the increased risk of condensation by opened windows or unsealed openings in the building envelope. Having constantly closed windows and mechanical ventilation in such a climate needs to significantly dehumidify outdoor air to avoid the risk of condensation. The present study examines the effects of coupling hybrid ventilation (window and mechanical) with radiant cooling during periods of acceptable outside air temperature. An optimization method that increases energy efficiency and maximizes risk-free window opening potential in the critical seasons (summer and autumn) is developed and applied. IDA-ICE software is used to conduct dynamic thermal simulations of a typical studio classroom model, for which different cases and conditions are investigated. Different cooling and ventilation scenarios and control strategies are integrated and examined. Potentials and limitations can be noted between the various cases. Moreover, analyses using ANSYS-CFX as well as other tools are developed for verification and to assess the impact of the suggested optimization method on the indoor air and user comfort. The findings indicate great potential for the proposed solution in lowering the energy demand considerably and providing condensation-risk-free window opening potential.

Für das Konzept der ersten Plusenergie‐Produktionsstätte in Ungarn wurde besonderes Augenmerk auf die natürliche Lüftung des Gebäudes mit passiven Lüftungstürmen gelegt. Mit dem Ziel, die planerischen Ansätze nachvollziehbar prüfen zu können, wurde ein vierstufiger Algorithmus bestehend aus gebäudeaerodynamischen Untersuchungen in Form von Berechnungen, Windkanaltests, CFD‐Simulationen und Messdatenerfassung im Gebäude entwickelt. Durch diese “Validierungsplattform“ können nicht nur nachgewiesene Aussagen über den aerodynamischen Charakter eines Gebäudes getroffen, sondern auch der Einfluss von Änderungen während der Planung und Ausführung sicher quantifiziert und bewertet werden. Darüber hinaus bewirkt die aerodynamische Optimierung eine Verbesserung der Behaglichkeit und Verringerung des Energieverbrauchs.Building aerodynamic investigations for an energy‐plus production facility in Sikonda (Hungary). The concept of the first energy‐plus production facility in Hungary, which was developed with Energy design method, consists in an essential design approach: the natural ventilation with passive ventilation towers. With the objective of generating comprehensible diagnosis to different design solutions, it was necessary to create a four‐level aerodynamic analysis algorithm consisting of calculations, wind tunnel tests, CFD simulations and measurements in buildings. This “validation platform” ensures not only proofed conclusions about the aerodynamic character of a project, but also quantifies in an accurate way the effect of modifications during planning and construction. In addition, the consequence of this aerodynamic optimization of the built environment is the improvement of the indoor comfort and well being as well as the reduction of energy consumption.

Impact of a Weather Predictive Control Strategy for Inert Building Technology on Thermal Comfort and Energy Demand

The sun’s total radiation alone exceeds the world population’s entire energy consumption by 7.500 times and ignites secondary renewable energy sources. The end energy consumption buildings use for heating amounts to 28% of Germany’s total energy consumption. With the ongoing trend of digitalization and the transition of the German energy supply away from fossil fuels and the consequent political dependency, electric heat pumps and photovoltaic (PV) systems have become increasingly important to the discussion. This has led to an increasing demand for smart control strategies, especially for inert systems such as thermally activated building systems (TABS). This paper presents and analyses a weather predictive control (WPC) strategy using a validated thermodynamic simulation model. The literature review of this paper outlines that the current common control strategies are data intense and complex in their implementation into the built environment. The simple approach of the WPC uses future ambient temperature and solar radiation to optimize the control of the heating, cooling, ventilation, and sun protection system. The thermal comfort and energy demand evaluate the concept. We show that with a WPC for TABS, thermal comfort can improve without increasing the energy demand for the office building in the moderate climate of Munich. Furthermore, this paper concludes that the WPC works more effectively with more thermal mass. This simplified building control strategy promotes the European roadmap goal of climate neutrality in 2050, as it bridges the phenomenon of the performance gap.
