Auditory Temporal Processing in Dancers

Abstract: While many studies have examined the auditory abilities of musicians, this study uniquely asks whether dance training, a similar yet understudied type of early-life training, also benefits auditory abilities. We focused this investigation on temporal resolution, given the importance of subtle temporal cues in synchronizing movement. We found that, compared to untrained controls, novice adult dancers who have trained continuously since childhood had enhanced temporal resolution, measured with a gap detection ta… Show more

“…Emerging evidence supports the present proposal that musicianship may indeed be best understood as continua of individual skills and aptitudes instead of a binary group affiliation (Nayak et al, 2021). Moreover, perceptual and motor skills commensurate with a high level of musical attainment have been observed in individuals who have never received any explicit instruction in playing an instrument (e.g., dancers, D'Souza & Wiseheart, 2018; Skoe et al, 2021), or enjoyed any musical training (Correia et al 2022; Kragness et al, 2022; McKay, 2021; Swaminathan et al, 2017; Swaminathan & Schellenberg, 2020; Wesseldijk et al, 2021). Notably, various cultures do not have a clear-cut distinction between dance and music, if it is present at all.…”

“…Recognizing the crucial role of subtle, momentary cues in synchronized movements, recent studies have delved into exploring multifaceted dimensions of dance. For instance, Skoe et al [1] have investigated the nuanced objectives of worldly dance, shedding light on the intricate connection between dance cognition and auditory perception. Thornquist [2] has explored the potential of dance exercise therapy as a means to reduce individuals' reliance on self-expressive substances.…”
