Attributing regional trends of evapotranspiration and gross primary productivity with remote sensing: a case study in the North China Plain

Abstract: Abstract. Attributing changes in evapotranspiration (ET) and gross primary productivity (GPP) is crucial for impact and adaptation assessment of the agro-ecosystems to climate change. Simulations with the VIP model revealed that annual ET and GPP slightly increased from 1981 to 2013 over the North China Plain. The tendencies of both ET and GPP were upward in the spring season, while they were weak and downward in the summer season. A complete factor analysis illustrated that the relative contributions of clima… Show more

“…The increase of ET has been regarded as a significant indicator of intensification of the regional water cycle (Mo, Chen, Hu, Liu, & Xia, ). For the eight study tributaries, ET in the southern catchments was generally higher than that in the northern catchments.…”

“…Daily global solar radiation (MJ m –2 d –1 ) was estimated from sunshine hours based on the Ångström–Prescott equation (Wang, Wang, Yin, Feng, & Zhao, 2015). The dominant soil type in the NCP is calcaric fluvisol or fambisol with silt texture (Mo, Chen, Hu, Liu, & Xia, 2017; Wang et al., 2017). Soil data for the top 150 cm of soil profile (maximum rooting depth), such as soil water content at a lower limit of 15 bar (LL15, mm mm –1 ), drained upper limit (DUL, mm mm –1 ), saturated moisture content (SAT, mm mm –1 ), bulk density (BD, g cm –3 ), organic carbon (OC, %), etc., in each site were derived from the Chinese Soil Database (http://soil.geodata.cn/index.html).…”

“…Earth observation satellites have imaged the Earth periodically since the 70´s. These images can be processed to derive a wide range of spatial information of paramount relevance for water resources monitoring, such as extent of water bodies (Huang et al, 2018;Marti-Cardona et al, 2010;Marti-Cardona et al, 2013), rainfall Zambrano-Bigiarini et al, 2017;Ayehu et al, 2018) inland waters surface temperature (Marti-Cardona et al, 2019;Liu et al, 2015), vegetation indexes (Duethmann and Blöschl, 2018;Eckert et al, 2015;de Jong et al, 2011), or per-pixel evapotranspiration 25 values (Running et al, 2017;Marti-Cardona et al, 2016;Karimi & Bastiaanssen, 2015;Mo et al, 2017).…”
