Attitudes Toward Self-Sampling for Cervical Cancer Screening among Primary Care Attendees Living on the US–Mexico Border

Abstract: In this qualitative study, we found positive attitudes toward self-sampling among women living along the US border with Mexico. Further research is needed to evaluate interventions that address women's low levels of self-efficacy to perform the test and to evaluate the effectiveness of self-sampling in increasing cervical cancer screening rates.

“…Only two studies (10.5%) demonstrated that the self-collection method exhibited low acceptability among women 9,23. The acceptability of the self-collection method among women was determined subjectively (without standardized questionnaires) in ten studies (52.6%) 10,13-16,18,20-21,23,26 and via structured and valid questionnaires in the remaining studies. Only five studies were randomized.…”

“…Depending on language preference, the education sessions were provided in English or Spanish, and lasted approximately 30 to 40 minutes. The educational material consisted of a PowerPoint presentation developed using information from focus groups done in this population, 24 literature, 25 and instructions on how to collect self-sampling provided by the manufacturer. The presentation included the Health Belief Model constructs of seriousness and susceptibility of the hrHPV infection, natural history of infection with hrHPV, as well as cervical cancer prevention through immunization, safe sex practices and cervical cancer screening.…”

“…In order to examine women’s attitudes towards self-sampling, we developed survey items measuring constructs identified as being significant in previous focus groups 24 and existing literature. 16,19 We used the term “Pap smear” referring to cervical cytology in all communication with subjects including surveys given that the former is more familiar term for lay public.…”

“…In a study with Hispanic women, who lived along the US border with Mexico, fear of embarrassment, the pelvic examination and lack of access to care services 19 were identified as barriers to screening. This feeling 20 may be related to unease faced with a real or imaginary danger, for women, as they do not know the examination and imagine that they will feel pain or discover a disease.…”
