Abstract: In the present study, we have examined whether increased N-ANP (N-terminal pro-ANP) levels before and after surgery in patients with ASD (atrial septal defect) along with echocardiographic findings provide a better insight into the pathophysiology and increased morbidity and mortality following corrective surgery. Eighteen adult ASD patients (> 20 years of age; six male and 12 female) with shunts (Qp/Qs > or = 2, where Qp/Qs is the pulmonary blood flow/systemic blood flow) had complete echocardiographic, clini… Show more

“…The time of ANP measurements may also be subject to criticism in this context, however, a previous study has shown that ANP stabilizes 1 month [17] following acute hemodynamic changes in the LA, and we aimed to evaluate persistent rather than acute changes. Furthermore, our group has previously shown that ANP levels indicate atrial arrhythmias in patients following surgery for atrial septal defect, which supported the findings of our current study [18]. In our opinion, NPs seem to have a significant effect on valvular pathologies, probably in association with atrial and ventricular remodeling.…”

“…After closure of ASD, levels of ANPN and volume of RV have decreased [13]. Serum levels of ANPN have been higher than in matched controls up to 35 years after surgical closure of ASD [37].…”

“…Studies on levels of natriuretic peptides in pediatric patients with different types of congenital heart defects and heart failure have been published. Unfortunately, the follow-up time in most has been short, and study groups have consisted of different types of congenital heart defects [1316]. To our knowledge, comparison of the effect of treatment for various types of loading conditions on levels of natriuretic peptides has not been performed.…”

“…Bunun yanında bazı araştırmacılar tarafından ASD'li hastalarda artan ANP'nin nöronal dokudaki yayılan kortikal depresyonu kolaylaştırdığı varsayılmıştır. İnvivo şartlarda ratlarda deneysel olarak oluşturulan kortikal depresyonu takiben ANP'nin artış gösterdiği "radyoimmunoassay (RIA)" yöntemiyle gösterilmiştir (4).…”
