Abstract: The present study was carried out to evolve an effective treatment strategy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Astaxanthin (AS) is abundantly present in red pigments of crustaceans, and has also been proven to have considerable biological activities. The anti-inflammatory effect of AS was evaluated in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-exposed RAW264.7 macrophages. It was found that AS markedly inhibited elevation of NO and pro-inflammatory mediators. Moreover, it downregulated iNOS in LPS-stimulated RAW26… Show more

“…These findings are in line with those of another study in which 9-d ASX supplementation at a dosage of 10 and 20 mg/kg BW inhibited cigarette smoke-induced COPD in mice (38). Furthermore, both studies reported decreased amounts of IL-6, TNF-α, and reactive oxygen species in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), suggesting an anti-inflammatory role of ASX (8,38). Roflumilast (ROF) is a prescription medicine used in the treatment of COPD.…”

“…The effect of a 12-wk ASX supplementation against cigarette smokeinduced COPD has been demonstrated in an animal model in which mice fed ASX developed less severe emphysema (8). These findings are in line with those of another study in which 9-d ASX supplementation at a dosage of 10 and 20 mg/kg BW inhibited cigarette smoke-induced COPD in mice (38). Furthermore, both studies reported decreased amounts of IL-6, TNF-α, and reactive oxygen species in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), suggesting an anti-inflammatory role of ASX (8,38).…”

“…In a streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat model, Yeh et al found that ATX administration attenuated diabetes-related ocular nerve injury by upregulating HO-1 to decrease oxidative stress and secondary inflammation and that NF-κB acted downstream following HO-1 39 . The beneficial potential of ATX against airway inflammation has also been observed with in vivo and in vitro models and was reported to be closely related to the participation of HO-1 55 . In the present study, burn injury led to a remarkable increase in HO-1 in renal tubules in response to thermal insult, whereas medium- and high-dose ATX further upregulated HO-1.…”

“…These data and other published data show an advantageous role of astaxanthin in protecting against numerous lung diseases by regulating several nuclear factors in NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways, JAK/STAT signaling pathways, Nrf-2/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) signaling pathway, the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/Akt (PI3K/Akt) signaling pathway, and modulates the immune response (Cai et al, 2019;Kubo et al, 2019;Nian et al, 2019;Xu et al, 2019;Akduman et al, 2021;Cheng and Eroglu, 2021).…”
