Associations of cardiovascular biomarkers and plasma albumin with exceptional survival to the highest ages

Abstract: Supercentenarians (those aged ≥110 years) are approaching the current human longevity limit by preventing or surviving major illness. Identifying specific biomarkers conducive to exceptional survival might provide insights into counter-regulatory mechanisms against aging-related disease. Here, we report associations between cardiovascular disease-related biomarkers and survival to the highest ages using a unique dataset of 1,427 oldest individuals from three longitudinal cohort studies, including 36 supercente… Show more

“…The concentration of blood biomarkers, including EC-SOD, adiponectin, NTproBNP, cystatin C (CstC), TNF-alpha, and interleukin-6 (IL-6) was measured in accordance with previously described protocols 35 . Blood test results for HbA1c, estimated glomerular filtration rate with creatinine correction (eGFRcreat), total cholesterol (TCHO), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were also obtained in accordance with previously described protocols 35 .…”

“…Briefly, the questionnaire and health data were obtained from the KAWP baseline survey conducted between March 2017 and December 2018. All participants were invited to hospitals, interviewed, and examined using a study protocol that was designed by the Tokyo Oldest Old Survey on Total Health and Japan Semi-supercentenarian Study, which were previously managed by the Center for Supercentenarian Medical Research, Keio University School of Medicine [ 17 , 18 ].…”

“…All participants were invited to visit one of three Kawasaki Municipal Hospitals (Kawasaki, Ida, or Tama) and were interviewed and examined using a study protocol that was harmonized with the Tokyo Oldest Old Survey on Total Health and Japan Semi-supercentenarian Study, both of which are managed by the Center for Supercentenarian Medical Research, Keio University School of Medicine. 7,8 Participants were asked to ll out a pre-mailed questionnaire including education (high school and higher education or not), living situation, marital status, current alcohol use, smoking status, and self-rated health. They were checked for consistency by interviewers at the time of the baseline survey.…”
