Associations Between Health Literacy and Established Predictors of Smoking Cessation

Abstract: Objectives We examined associations between health literacy and predictors of smoking cessation among 402 low-socioeconomic status (SES), racially/ethnically diverse smokers. Methods Data were collected as part of a larger study evaluating smoking health risk messages. We conducted multiple linear regression analyses to examine relations between health literacy and predictors of smoking cessation (i.e., nicotine dependence, smoking outcome expectancies, smoking risk perceptions and knowledge, self-efficacy, … Show more

“…Aside from intrinsically adding even more risk and disease burden, these characteristics are also associated with low socioeconomic status, 27,28 low health literacy, 29 and poor access to health care, 30 which may explain in part why emergency presentations come with more serious disease: for these underprivileged patients, often reluctant to seek medical attention until their symptoms become too severe to ignore, the ED is often the primary presentation site. In that sense, it is hardly a surprise to see these patients with both more advanced and more aggressive disease.…”

“…According to the opinions of some researchers, it is necessary to integrate HBM with other constructs for better understanding of the reasons for complex behaviors such as smoking (14), potential effect of HL on the constructs of the model (20), as well as the role of low HL in smoking (10), weaker results of smoking cessation (12), the return of smoking (11). Due to the increasing rate of smoking among students (5-8), we thought there is a need for more efficient ways to prevent smoking among the young population and adolescents.…”
