Abstract: Background Flavonoids, compounds found in plant-based foods and beverages, might ameliorate vascular damage and atherosclerosis. Therefore, our aim was to assess the association between flavonoid intake and hospital admissions due to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Methods In this prospective cohort study, participants from the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health Study were crosslinked with Danish nationwide registries. Eligible participants were aged 50-65 years, had no previous history of atherosclerotic … Show more

“…Lifespan wear and tear of the vascular system due to poor nutrition and lack of fitness, among other factors, can accelerate cognitive aging and lead to dementia. There is epidemiological evidence suggesting that flavonoids, a group of small molecules present in fruits and vegetables, can protect against vascular disease and cardiovascularrelated mortality [1][2][3][4] . In particular, cocoa flavanols, a sub-group of flavonoids (also present in berries, grapes, apples and tea) have been shown to improve endothelial function in humans quite rapidly (within 1-2 h) by enhancing vasodilatory properties of peripheral arteries 5,6 .…”

“…ISO was initially isolated from Psoralea corylifolia, but has also been identified in other plants, including in Angelica keiskei 50 , Artocarpus species 46 , Cullen corylifolium 77 , Dorstena barteri 38 , Erythrena fusca 78 , Fatoua pilosa 44 , Morus alba 79 , and Piper longum 72 . This suggests that ISO is rather prevalent in plants, perhaps contributing to the broad pro-health effects of plant-enriched diets 80,81 . However, additional studies are required to confirm this conjecture.…”

“…The studies included 1 501 645 individuals and a total of 33 637 cases of CVD, 23 664 of CHD, and 11 860 of stroke. The countries where the studies were conducted were US (n = 12), [25,28,31,34,37,39,[41][42][43]51,53,54] Europe (n = 21), [22][23][24]26,27,29,30,32,33,35,36,40,45,48,49,52,[56][57][58][59][60] Asia (n = 5), [38,44,46,50,55] and Australia (n = 1). [47] Food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) were used as a tool to collect dietary information in 28 studies, [25,26,28,29,31,32,34,[36][37][38]…”
