Forest transformation has major impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Identifying the influence of forest habitat structure and composition on avian functional communities is important for conserving and managing forest systems. This study investigated the effect of forest structure and composition characteristics on bird species community structure, habitat use and functional diversity in 14 Mistbelt Forest patches of the Midlands of KwaZulu‐Natal in South Africa. We surveyed bird communities using point counts. We quantified bird functional diversity for each forest patch using three diversity indices: functional richness, functional evenness and functional divergence. We further assessed species‐specific responses by focussing on three avian forest specialists, orange ground‐thrush Geokichla gurneyi, forest canary Crithagra scotops and Cape parrot Poicephalus robustus. We found that bird community and forest‐specialist species responses to forest structure and tree species diversity differed. Also, forest structural complexity, canopy cover and tree species richness were the main forest characteristics better at explaining microhabitat influence on bird functional diversity. Forest patches with relatively high structural complexity and tree species richness had higher functional richness. Different structural characteristics influenced habitat use by the three forest specialists. Tree species diversity influenced C. scotops and G. gurneyi positively, while P. robustus responded negatively to forest patches with high tree species richness. Our study showed that site‐scale forest structure and composition characteristics are important for bird species richness and functional richness. Forest patches with high tree species diversity and structural complexity should be maintained to conserve forest specialists, bird species richness and functional richness.

The loss of mature forests is a known stressor of forest management on biodiversity. Mature forests provide unique habitat for forest birds. Here, we examine the capacity of mature forest stands embedded in an intensively managed landscape to provide habitat for landbird species that are associated with mature, unfragmented habitats. We carry this out by comparing bird communities in forest stands in three landscapes with a gradient of management activity. We examined community-level indicators (richness, diversity, abundance and community structure), and trait-level indicators (species groups associated with cavity nesting, mature forests, interior forests and area sensitivity). We found no obvious negative effects on bird communities, species and trait groups in forest stands in the most intensively managed landscape relative to the less intensively managed landscapes. Our ability to draw inferences about the influence of management intensity is limited due to lack of replication; however, these results do provide evidence that mature forest stands within intensively managed landscapes can provide valuable habitat to mature forest associates. There are often trade-offs between generating wood products from the forest and the provision of mature forest habitats. Research on forest birds can provide some of the necessary information for assessing the size and shape of those trade-offs and help to inform the conversation about the desired structure, function and composition of forests.

Objectives:The objective was to determine the composition and distribution of feeding guilds and bill volume of an assemblage of birds in four vegetation covers within the Terrapreta Private Natural Reserve. Methods: The vegetation covers were classified using Corine Land Cover method. Six sampling zones were defined, and three rounds were conducted between February and May 2023. Feeding guilds were identified according to diet, substrate, and foraging. Birds were captured with mist nets, bill measurements were taken, and volume was calculated. To evaluate guilds with vegetation cover, Marimekko, Chisquare and linear regression were performed, to establish the relation between bill volume and feeding guilds, a Boxplot plot and Wilcoxon rank-sum test were performed in the Rstudio program V. 4.3.1. Findings: 211 individuals in 6 order, 18 families, and 49 species, were captured and seven feeding guilds were identified: the most diverse (30.61%) and abundant (19.91%) group was Insectivore-Frugivore. In contrast, Granivore-Insectivore and Insectivore-Animalivore, had two species (4.08%) and 11 individuals (5.21%) each. The most abundant guild was found in a High Dense Terra Firme Forest (34.12%) with the highest specificity in bill volume (0.04 cm 3 to 0.92 cm 3 ) with total length values ranging between 7.7 cm and 20 cm. The relation between vegetation cover and the proportion of feeding guilds were significant (X 2 = 70.095, df = 18, p-value <0.05); feeding guilds and bill volume had statistically significant differences Wilcoxon rank-sum test (with a p<0.05). The impact on vegetation cover because of habitat transformation, especially on food resources, can be reflected in the guild structure, which can be interpreted as less ecosystem complexity, with the presence or absence of determined feeding guilds. Novelty: Functional traits, bill volume, and feeding guilds provide a tool to evaluate strategies for restoration process and contribute to management and conservation plans within protected natural reserves.
