Association of Television Viewing During Childhood With Poor Educational Achievement

Abstract: Television viewing in childhood and adolescence is associated with poor educational achievement by 26 years of age. Excessive television viewing in childhood may have long-lasting adverse consequences for educational achievement and subsequent socioeconomic status and well-being.

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…Adolescents who scored one standard deviation above the sample average on television viewing and Internet use were categorized as belonging to the “primarily watching television” and “primarily using Internet” after-school activity groups. The sample mean and standard deviation of television viewing ( true X ¯ = 2.09 hours, SD = 1.43 hours) and Internet use ( true X ¯ = 1.62 hours, SD = 1.19 hours) were similar to the results of previous time-use studies on media that were conducted with young adolescents (Hancox, Milne, & Poulton, 2005). “…Like Gentile et al (2004), by controlling for vital factors such as family, educational, or immigrant background we could achieve a high resolution, which is invaluable for multivariate analyses. The subsequent longitudinal study could widely replicate our cross‐sectional results and – like Ennemoser and Schneider (2007) or Hancox et al (2005) – allowed us to interpret our findings as causal correlations.
