Association of matrix metalloproteinases 3 and 9 single nucleotide polymorphisms with breast cancer risk: A case‑control study

Abstract: Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) 3 and 9 are functionally implicated in the progression of various types of cancer, including breast cancer (BC). However, the roles of these SNPs remain controversial. In addition, they also vary between one population and another. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the possible association between MMP3-1171 5A/6A and MMP9-1562 CT SNPs and the risk of BC among Egyptians, and to elucidate the alteration of MMP3 and MMP9… Show more

“…For studies that could possibly contain data we needed, we also contacted the authors for the original data by Email. Finally, 21 relevant documents 10–31 were retrieved, including 25 case-control studies, in which there were two documents containing three case-control studies. A total of 10,336 cases and 11,000 controls were included.…”

“…For instance, MMP-2/MMP-3/MMP-7 serum levels are significantly increased in SLE and associated with disease activity, while elevated serum levels of MMP-12 have been observed in other systemic autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic scleroderma [59][60][61][62]. MMP-2, -3, -7 and -12 have been reported to be overexpressed and associated with tumour propagation and poor cancer prognosis [59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71]. Thus, MMP deregulation in diseases might yield different forms of sCD95L, thereby resulting in abnormal CD95 signalling, which in turn could produce undesirable effects associated with the disease in question.…”
