Association of Major Chronic Noncommunicable Diseases and Life Expectancy in China, 2019

Abstract: This study aimed to illustrate the association of four major chronic noncommunicable diseases (cardiovascular diseases, cancer, respiratory diseases, and diabetes) with life expectancy (LE) of Chinese residents in 2019 and to provide an evidence base for the scientific prevention and treatment of chronic diseases in China. The abbreviated life and cause-eliminated life tables were compiled according to the Jiang Qing Lang method recommended by WHO (World Health Organization) to calculate LE and cause-eliminate… Show more

“…It was predicted that from 2010 to 2030, there will be a 67% increase in the prevalence of diabetes in developing countries (10). Diabetes is still the second largest factor affecting LE from a global perspective (11). To reduce the mortality and impact of diabetes, the population should exercise sensibly and develop healthy eating habits, and the state should provide care and treatment services to help diabetic patients with health management.…”

“…This research’s results suggest China should devote more efforts to improve the health condition of elderly adults in China, especially those with chronic diseases. Beyond health spending, healthcare access, and the quality of health care, socio-demographic development may also be a key determinant of health outcomes ( 12 ). Therefore, a comprehensive health planning strategy is required.…”

“…Mortality, life expectancy (LE), and cause-eliminated life expectancy (CELE) were calculated using the abbreviated life table and cause-eliminated life table [ 11 ]. Cause-eliminated life expectancy highlights the severity of a certain cause of death’s influence on population health [ 12 ]. Years of life lost (YLLs) is the number of years death happened earlier than expected.…”

“…We adopted the abbreviated life table to generate the life expectancy and cause-eliminated life expectancy (CELE). CELE means that people who would have died from a specific disease would live longer if this death cause had been eliminated [ 10 ]. Thus, the increase in life expectancy (CELE - life expectancy) could reflect the severity of the health impact of a given death cause on the population.…”
