Association of Dental Caries with HLA Class II Allele in Brazilian Adolescents

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between the frequencies of DR and DQ HLA class II alleles and the prevalence of dental caries in Brazilian adolescents. The study sample consisted of 164 adolescents aged 15– 19 years. For the assessment of caries experience the DMFT index was used, according to World Health Organization criteria. DNA samples of the adolescents were extracted from oral mucosa cells. The amplification of the alleles HLA-DR and HLA-DQ was carried out by polymerase chain r… Show more

“…An extensive search of the literature showed that only one disease is partially ‘protected' by an HLA-DQ, CD-predisposing haplotype (DQ2), which is dental caries. A recent Brazilian study showed that adolescents positive for the HLA-DQ2 allele were less likely to have dental caries than their counterparts who were negative for this allele (OR = 0.33, CI 0.16-0.66) [30]. Nothing was found about disease protection induced by the HLA-DQ8 haplotype.…”

“…Accordingly, several studies in humans have indicated that polymorphisms in genes involved in enamel formation [Patir et al, 2008;Kang et al, 2011;Shimizu et al, 2012;Tannure et al, 2012;Saha et al, 2015], saliva composition [Anjomshoaa et al, 2015;Sengul et al, 2016], and immune response [Bagherian et al, 2008;Azevedo et al, 2010;Valarini et al, 2012;Fine et al, 2013], including DEFB1 [Ozturk et al, 2010;Krasone et al, 2014;Yildiz et al, 2016], play a role in caries susceptibility.…”

“…(MBL2) , matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) , tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 2 (TIMP2) , and human leucocyte antigen (HLA serotype DQ2) genes have been shown to be associated with the development of dental caries in a number of populations, including Caucasian, South American, European and Chinese individuals [Acton et al, 1999;Ozawa et al, 2001;Eisen and Minchinton, 2003;Ezekowitz, 2003;Bouwman et al, 2006;Bagherian et al, 2008;Katz et al, 2009;Shimada et al, 2009;Yildiz et al, 2009;Tannure et al, 2012;Letra et al, 2012b;Olszowski et al, 2012;Valarini et al, 2012;Yang et al, 2013].…”
