Association of Bone Metabolism with Fatty Liver Disease in the Elderly in Japan: A Community-based Study

Abstract: Objective With the aging of society, both osteoporosis and fatty liver disease (FLD) are becoming important issues. However, the relationship between osteoporosis and FLD remains controversial. We investigated the association between bone metabolism and FLD in a Japanese community in a cross-sectional study. Methods A total of 1,020 participants were enrolled in a health survey. FLD was diagnosed by ultrasonography. Bone metabolism was evaluated based on bone mineral density (BMD), which was assessed using dua… Show more

“…This program has been conducted annually since 2005 with approximately 1,000 participants in the Iwaki region of Hirosaki City in Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan. (16)(17)(18)(19) All the study subjects participated voluntarily in response to a public announcement, and approximately 600 data points were collected from each participant, including their demographics, medical history, lifestyle data, and microbiota and blood chemical analysis data. To date, we have shown the association of NAFLD with adipokines, microbiota, and changed amino acids in this health promotion study.…”

“…In turn, such pathological processes (myosteatosis, sarcopenia, and disorders of bone tissue metabolism) may be associated with an aggravated course of NAFLD. Some studies established that bone turnover in elderly patients with NAFLD was associated with a slowdown in the rate of bone formation and increased rate of bone resorption, which was indicative of an amplified risk of developing osteoporosis in this cohort [10][11][12].…”

“…В китайской популяции была обнаружена отрицательная связь между НАЖБП и МПК как у женщин в постменопаузе, так и у мужчин. Подобные результаты были обнаружены в популяции корейских мужчин [210]. Также было продемонстрировано, что НАЖБП может оказывать негативное влияние на МПК у подростков с ожирением, вероятно, за счет ИР.…”
