A High-Protein/Low-Fat Diet May Interact with Vitamin D-Binding Protein Gene Variants to Moderate the Risk of Depression in Apparently Healthy Adults

Background: Recent studies have shown that depression is inversely correlated with high protein and low fat intake and positively correlated with vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP). Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the interaction between protein/fat dietary patterns and VDBP genotypes with regard to the risk of depression in apparently healthy adults who have not been diagnosed with any chronic disease. Methods: In this study, 265 individuals (126 males and 139 females) aged 18–55 years were recruited from the communities of central and west Tehran based on convenience sampling. Body composition was measured with a body composition analyzer and depression symptoms were categorized as normal, moderate depression, or severe depression using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales 21 (DASS-21) questionnaire. Dietary patterns were determined by a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire to assess typical food intake during the 12-month period. Blood samples were collected from and biochemical measurements performed on all participants. An analysis of two polymorphisms (rs7041 and rs4588) in the GC gene, which encodes VDBP, was performed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Results: A statistically significant association was found between depression and diet (p = 0.03) after having categorized the participants into three groups: a high-protein/low-fat (HP/LF) group, a moderate-protein/moderate-fat (MP/MF) group, and a low-protein/high-fat (LP/HF) group. Moreover, the findings demonstrated that depression was related to both the rs7041 and the rs4588 polymorphism (p = 0.05 and p = 0.02, respectively). We next used multinomial logistic modeling to investigate the risk of depression. A significant interaction was observed between HP/LF diet and the rs7041 polymorphism in the moderate- and severe-depression groups (β = –0.30, p = 0.05, and β = –0.48, p = 0.01, respectively). Conclusion: This study showed that an HP/LF diet interacts with the rs7041 polymorphism, with T allele carriers having a greater prevalence of moderate and severe depression.

AIMS To evaluate how depression and diabetes severity impacts disability progression among Mexican Americans over a 15-year period. METHODS We used seven waves of the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly (H-EPESE). Primary disability outcomes included the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) scales. Explanatory variables included time since diagnosis with diabetes (no type 2 diabetes, 1-10, 11-20, 21+), an indicator of disease severity, and depression. Longitudinal generalized estimating equation models were used to estimate the relationship between time since diabetes diagnosis, depressive symptoms and ADL and IADL disability progression over a 15-year time period. RESULTS Years since diabetes diagnosis was associated with more rapid ADL and IADL disability progression compared to those without type 2 diabetes. Depression accelerated the disabling process in participants who were diagnosed with diabetes 11 years or more years ago. CONCLUSIONS Longer duration of diabetes and greater symptoms of depression increases vulnerability for disability among older Mexican American adults.

Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the association between glycemic control and quality of life (QoL) in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and identify that factors that influence glycemic control and QoL. Methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted at the general hospital in Depok City from October to December 2017. Respondents were outpatients diagnosed with T2DM, receiving routine care at the hospital. Glycemic control was assessed using glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, while QoL was measured using an Indonesian version of the validated 5-level EuroQol 5-Dimensional.Results: Among 108 participants, HbA1c levels were influenced by age, DM disease duration, DM treatment adherence, glycemic control, diet, and physical activity suitable for patients with DM. The mean QoL value was 0.74±0.23 and the visual analog scale (VAS) score was 65.49±15.96. The QoL values of patients with DM were influenced by HbA1c levels, duration of DM, and physical activity, while the VAS score was significantly affected by HbA1c levels and duration of DM. Conclusion:The present study showed that the QoL of T2DM patients was significantly influenced by glycemic control and other factors.
