The article is devoted to a theoretical analysis of the phenomenon of attitude towards the Other as an object. The purpose of the article is to compare the terminology used in the scientific literature; identifying the advantages and limitations of the term objectification; identification and grouping of disparate criteria for the classification of objectification, approaches to its understanding. The authors compare narrow and broad approaches to understanding objectification in modern science; a rationale is given for the universality of a broad approach to understanding the phenomenon of objectification as a process of objectification of the Other, which is accompanied by one or more signs: an instrumental attitude towards the other, attitude as property, denial of his autonomy, reduction of subjectivity, lack of consideration of the boundaries of the other. The article identifies criteria for classifying the phenomenon of objectification: by sphere of occurrence; on a philosophical approach to understanding the phenomenon of objectification; according to the criterion of intentionality; according to the criterion of reductionism; by object of comparison. Based on the results of an analysis of modern domestic and foreign research, possible approaches to understanding the phenomenon of objectification are grouped: objectification as a consequence of biological determinism; cultural phenomenon; manifestation of power; response to uncertainty about one’s own competence; response to threat; manifestation of fear of death; a way of abstracting from the unimportant; a consequence of the organization of work activity; coping strategy to help cope with empathic distress; a consequence of the unsatisfactory nature of interpersonal relationships; a consequence of unsatisfaction of basic human needs; a consequence of personal characteristics (egocentrism, ego immaturity). Scientific novelty: lies in the comparison of existing terminology that describes the phenomenon of relating to the Other as an object; in justifying the advantages and limitations of the term objectification; highlighting the criteria for classifying the phenomenon, as well as grouping disparate approaches to understanding the origins of objectification. Scope of application of the results: the theoretical review carried out in the work can be used when teaching courses on the social psychology of interpersonal relationships. The article is part of the dissertation research of one of the authors of the article.

BackgroundWith the rapid changes in body image construction brought about by the upgrading of consumption in China, trend-seeking college students are faced with mental health problems brought about by the pursuit of the “ideal body type,” which cannot be ignored. This study aims to explore the relationship between body image construction and mental health among college students. This study utilized data from the Survey on Physical Activity and Mental Health of College Students. A total of 1,192 students were randomly selected as the survey sample, and 1,044 valid samples were obtained. The mean age of the respondents was 19.34 years.MethodsFirst, we categorized body image constructs into three categories based on the differences between subjective and objective body image: high acceptance, low acceptance, and consistency. Second, to ensure analytical rigor and minimize potential confounders, we used a generalized propensity score weighting model. Finally, we used a causal mediation framework to investigate the potential causal mechanisms between the independent variable (perceived body image bias) and the dependent variable (mental health) in order to better understand the “net effect.”Results(1) There is a significant correlation between college students’ body image perceptual bias and mental health, i.e., the higher the individual’s acceptance of his/her own body image, the higher the level of mental health, and vice versa. (2) Students in humanities and social sciences are more likely to have increased psychological burden due to poor negative body image. (3) In the mediation analysis, although the causal mediating effect of physical exercise was not significant, family and peer support in physical exercise played an important mediating role, especially the influence of peers was more significant.ConclusionThe construction of body image is a double-edged sword that can either promote positive individual development or lead to self-depreciation. Creating a positive climate for physical activity has a positive impact on college students’ mental health compared to participation in physical activity behaviors. While improving students’ media literacy on college campuses, it is important to enhance adaptive guidance to promote their physical and mental health and personal development.

ObjectiveConducting a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesize previously obtained results regarding the relationship between interest in cosmetic surgery and personality traits.MethodologyA series of criteria were applied (at the level of design, independent variables, dependent variable, participants) in order to decide which existing studies could be considered eligible for inclusion in the meta-analytic procedure. The identification of research that met the eligibility criteria was carried out with the help of the electronic search function in the following databases: ScienceDirect, PsycInfo, Web of Science, Scopus, Springer, and PubMed. Following this approach left 13 studies that were then subjected to the final analysis and included in the meta-analysis.ResultsThe researchers’ expectations were partially supported by the results of the analyses, thus demonstrating the existence of a significant relationship between perfectionism (socially prescribed perfectionism; perfectionistic self-promotion), appearance-based rejection sensitivity, and interest in pursuing esthetic surgery.DiscussionsIdentifying these relationships will allow cosmetic surgeons to understand both the mechanisms underlying this decision and the need for psychological assessment/counseling before patients undergo such procedures. It will also allow psychologists to develop best practice guidelines for how they relate to the patient before they perform cosmetic surgery. At the same time, psychotherapists will be able to devise targeted and personalized interventions for each personality profile, so that the decision to undergo an esthetic operation is not made based on a dispositional trait (fear of rejection, stress caused by body dissatisfaction).
