Abstract: Background Combined sewer overflow (CSO) events release untreated wastewater into surface waterbodies during heavy precipitation or snowmelt. Combined sewer systems serve approximately 40 million people in the United States, primarily in urban and suburban municipalities in the Midwest and Northeast.
