Different parts of Pistacia species are traditionally used to treat various skin problems. Traditional experiences can be a good basis for research on the therapeutic effects of medicinal plants. The active compounds of plants can be identified and used in different disorders in an innovative way. There are several studies that have evaluated the Pistacia species for dermatological disorders. However, despite the valuable effects of the Pistacia species on skin disease, there is no comprehensive review of the dermal effects of these plants. So, in this study, current evidence regarding the dermatological effect of the Pistacia species has been reviewed. Electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched for in vivo, in vitro, and clinical studies that examined dermatological effects of Pistacia species. According to the review, most of the evidence of dermatological effects in the Pistacia genus comes from preliminary studies on wound healing, cutaneous leishmaniasis, inflammation caused by UV rays and photo-protection, hyperpigmentation disorders, and atopic dermatitis. The Pistacia genus was implicated in 3 clinical studies and 30 in vivo/in vitro studies showing several mechanisms that go beyond its dermatological effects. The traditional medicinal effects of these herbs are supported by some scientific evidence. The potential protective/therapeutic effects of these herbs need to be studied further so that they can be considered as possible future candidates for use in skin care products.

The current work was designed to undertake a qualitative phytochemical screening of various plant parts of Pistacia palaestina, and estimate antioxidant and wound healing activities for therapeutic applications. The qualitative phytochemical screening of the leaf and the fruit of P. palaestina was performed using different chemical tests. The total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activity were determined by using Folin-Ciocalteu, aluminum chloride, and DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl) methods, respectively. The extracts with the highest TPC and TFC were examined for their wound healing activity using an incision wound model on rats. The qualitative phytochemical screening revealed the presence of phenols, tannins, flavonoids, carbohydrates, saponins, phytosterols, terpenoids, mucilages, and resins, whereas no coumarins, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, or anthraquinones were found. TPC and TFC were observed between (144.80 ± 8.81 to 489.79 ± 15.09 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g extract) and (18.34 ± 1.16 to 36.16 ± 1.05 mg rutin equivalent (RUE)/g extract), respectively. Methanolic extracts of leaves and fruits showed high antioxidant activity with IC50 about 5.16 ± 1.22 and 8.21 ± 1.87 μg/mL, respectively, which are slightly higher than ascorbic acid (IC50 = 3.52 ± 0.14 μg/mL). The prepared ointments from methanolic extracts significantly accelerated wound healing compared to a negative control group, as the final time of healing was 8.2 ± 1.30 (fruits), 9.6 ± 1.14 (leaves), 12 ± 1.22 (gentamicin ointment 0.1%) and more than 21 (negative control) days. In conclusion, P. palaestina could be used for the treatment of skin wounds.

Amaç: Pistacia, içerisinde P. lentiscus gibi tıbbi türleri ihtiva eden Anacardiaceae familyasına ait, Akdeniz havzası boyunca yaygın dağılıma sahip bir cinstir. P. lentiscus'un çeşitli kısımları geleneksel tıpta pek çok hastalığın tedavisinde kullanılmaktadır. Bu derlemede, P. lentiscus türünün botanik özellikleri, geleneksel kullanımları, fitokimyasal içeriği ve farmakolojik aktiviteleri ile ilgili kapsamlı bilgiler özetlenmeye çalışılmıştır.Sonuç ve Tartışma: Literatür taramaları bu türün antioksidan, antimutajenik, animikrobiyal, antiviral, antienflamatuvar, gastrointestinal hastalıklar, karaciğer ve serum biyokimyasal parametreler üzerindeki etkileri, antiaterosklerotik ve antidiyabetik, antiparaziter, antitümör, antikolinesteraz, nöroprotektif ve yara iyileştirici aktivitelerin de olduğu çok çeşitli farmakolojik aktiviteler bakımından değerlendirildiğini göstermiştir. P. lentiscus terpenoitler, fenolik bileşikler, yağ asitleri ve steroller gibi çeşitli fitokimyasal bileşenleri ihtiva etmektedir. Yapılan araştırma sonucunda P. lentiscus türünün çeşitli farmasötik şekillerde doğal kaynaklı ilaçların geliştirilmesi ve ticarileştirilmesi için önemli bir kaynak olduğu, ama risk faktörlerini daha iyi aydınlatmak adına daha fazla preklinik ve klinik çalışmaya gereksinim duyulduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.
