Assessment of the Impact Resistance of a Composite Material with EN AW-7075 Matrix Reinforced with α-Al2O3 Particles Using a 7.62 × 39 mm Projectile

Abstract: The paper presents the results of studies on the effects of shooting composite materials produced by pressure infiltration with the EN AW-7075 alloy as a matrix and reinforcement in the form of preforms made of α-Al2O3 particles. Composite materials were made with two reinforcement contents (i.e., 30% and 40% vol. of α-Al2O3 particles). The composites produced in the form of 12 mm thick plates were subjected to impact loads from a 7.62 × 39 FMJ M43 projectile fired from a Kalashnikov. The samples of composites… Show more

“…The impact strength of the composites decreases as the wt.% of the reinforcement increases due to the presence of hard ceramic particles. Similar observation also reported by previous researchers [ 29 , 30 , 31 ]. The de-bonding of ceramic reinforcement and matrix occurs easily during impact testing.…”

“…They demonstrate a high range of deformation under various loading conditions, where the damage mechanism is usually caused by buckling, bending, and shearing [ 26 ]. These properties are particularly important for energy absorption and crashworthiness applications, where a wide range of material deformations without a damage mechanism such as cracking suddenly occurring are required [ 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ].…”

“…The characteristics of the material properties of the projectile and the used polymers [55][56][57][58][59] E-Young's modulus; v-Poisson's ratio; r-density was presented in the form of a cubic geometry, which was digitized with solid elements. The interaction between the core and the facings has been assigned to the function "hard" contact.…”
