Objetivo. Determinar el nivel de impacto ambiental ocasionado por una estación acuícola de producción intensiva de trucha arcoíris (Onchorhynchus mykiss), en sistemas de jaulas flotantes en los nutrientes del agua y macroinvertebrados bentónicos en el Lago Guamuez. Materiales y Métodos. El estudio se desarrolló en tres áreas del Lago Guamuez (dos instalaciones de jaulas flotantes y un punto control). Dentro de las áreas se tomaron tres estaciones de muestreo con profundidades de 0, 10 y 20 metros, con el fin de realizar mediciones de fósforo total, nitritos, nitratos y fosfatos. Asi mismo se realizaron inmersiones a una profundidad aproximada de 20 metros, recolectando muestras de sedimentos para la identificación de macroinvertebrados. El impacto ambiental se evaluó mediante la relación de las variables mencionadas, utilizando análisis discriminante y análisis de varianza, previo la verificación de los supuestos estadísticos. Resultados. Los nutrientes nitritos, nitratos, fosfatos y fósforo total, presentaron diferencias significativas (p<0.05) entre todas las áreas y solo en algunas profundidades de muestreo. Adicionalmente se recolectaron siete familias de macroinvertebrados, (Chironomidae, Thiaridae, Ampullariidae, Planaridae y Tubificidae indicadoras de aguas contaminadas y medianamente contaminadas e Hydrobiosidae e Hydrachnidae indicadoras de buena calidad de agua). Conclusiones. En las jaulas de cultivo a diferencia del punto control, se evidenciaron mayores valores en el contenido de nutrientes; de igual forma, se encontraron las familias de macroinvertebrados indicadoras de aguas contaminadas o medianamente contaminadas. Sin embargo, los resultados encontrados no se encuentran en límites de riesgo para el sistema lacustre ni para los animales de cultivo.

Soil degradation and reservoir siltation are two of the major actual environmental, scientific, and engineering challenges. With the actual trend of world population increase, further pressure is expected on both water and soil systems around the world. Soil degradation and reservoir siltation are, however, strongly interlinked with the erosion processes that take place in the hydrological catchments, as both are consequences of these processes. Due to the spatial scale and duration of erosion events, the installation and operation of monitoring systems are rather cost- and time-consuming. Modeling is a feasible alternative for assessing the soil loss adequately. In this study, the possibility of adopting reservoir sediment stock as a validation measure for a monthly time-step sediment input model was investigated. For the assessment of sediment stock in the reservoir, the commercial free-fall penetrometer GraviProbe (GP) was used, while the calculation of sediment yield was calculated by combining a revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE)-based model with a sediment delivery ratio model based on the connectivity approach. For the RUSLE factors, a combination of remote sensing, literature review, and conventional sampling was used. For calculation of the C Factor, satellite imagery from the Sentinel-2 platform was used. The C Factor was derived from an empirical approach by combining the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the degree of soil sealing, and land-use/land-cover data. The key research objective of this study was to examine to what extent a reservoir can be used to validate a long-term erosion model, and to find out the limiting factors in this regard. Another focus was to assess the potential improvements in erosion modeling from the use of Sentinel-2 data. The use of such data showed good potential to improve the overall spatial and temporal performance of the model and also dictated further opportunities for using such types of model as reliable decision support systems for sustainable catchment management and reservoir protection measures.

Several dozen fish species have been introduced into Neotropical waters, causing significant biotic changes that include deterministic predation interactions with ecosystem effects. In general, reservoirs are preferred over lakes as places for stocking policies, due to their artificial aspect, consequently promoting fish introductions. In a meta-analytic approach, we compared the biomass of plankton-feeding (and top predators) with bottom-feeding fish species between reservoirs and lakes, considering the influence of invaders and trophic levels. Among the 26 ecosystems (12 reservoirs and 14 lakes), there is a dominance of non-native bottom-feeding species in artificial environments. We revealed a mechanism behind this dominance in a study case, a tendency for trophic downgrading and biotic homogenization based on interactions between an expatriate invasive centrarchid (sunfish family) predator from North America (the largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides) and two omnivorous cichlids from Africa in novel environmental contexts in Brazil (the benthification process). Both juvenile and adult largemouth bass are keystone predators in aquatic food webs in both their native and introduced ranges. The omnivore-detritivore tilapiines Oreochromis spp. and the phytophagous-omnivorous Coptodon spp. are species that exhibits strong generalist tendencies. Such species feed on the omnivore and detritivore compartments, enhancing detritus cycling among a large variety of d 13 C sources. Since their consumption is disproportionate, facilitation of other species occurs with multiplicative effects in the environment. Interactions between invasive species, that is, when an invasive predator (bird, fish, or invertebrate) eats an invasive prey (mainly fish and invertebrates), can serve to highlight biotic homogenization on fresh waters.
