Assessment of Nutrition Knowledge and Attitudes in Preclinical Osteopathic Medical Students

Abstract: The majority of participants felt comfortable counseling future patients on nutrition recommendations; however, most participants lacked knowledge of dietary reference intakes and medical nutrition therapy. Because half of osteopathic medical students typically enter primary care, students and their future patients would benefit from the integration of more nutrition education in medical school.

“…On the aggregate, majority (64%) of the respondents have poor knowledge of obesity. This was similar to the results reported among students at Ohio by Emily et al [30] However, Deotale [16] reported 100% good knowledge of obesity among medical students in India. This is not surprising as medical students are exposed to lectures on obesity and its associated factors.…”

“…In a study of preclinical osteopathic medical students, Hargrove et al found that 50.6% of all participants did not obtain the pass mark in a nutrition knowledge questionnaire. 16 Research findings on the perceived confidence of medical students to offer nutrition advice are not consistent. [21][22][23][24][25][26] The adequacy of undergraduate medical nutrition education has long been a concern.…”

“…Various studies have found similar holes in basic knowledge [66][67][68][69]. For example, although most medical students (68%) in a recent study considered nutritional counseling to be important, more than half did not pass a basic nutrition test; questions about energy density, energy balance, cholesterol guidelines and medical nutrition therapy for aspects of metabolic syndrome were answered incorrectly [70]. Lack of accountability exists because only a tiny fraction of board/licensing questions are oriented toward detailed nutritional knowledge, especially in regard to chronic disease management and prevention [71].…”
