In this data article, we present a comprehensive dataset on electrical energy consumption in a university that is practically driven by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The total amount of electricity consumed at Covenant University, Ota, Nigeria was measured, monitored, and recorded on daily basis for a period of 12 consecutive months (January–December, 2016). Energy readings were observed from the digital energy meter (EDMI Mk10E) located at the distribution substation that supplies electricity to the university community. The complete energy data are clearly presented in tables and graphs for relevant utility and potential reuse. Also, descriptive first-order statistical analyses of the energy data are provided in this data article. For each month, the histogram distribution and time series plot of the monthly energy consumption data are analyzed to show insightful trends of energy consumption in the university. Furthermore, data on the significant differences in the means of daily energy consumption are made available as obtained from one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and multiple comparison post-hoc tests. The information provided in this data article will foster research development in the areas of energy efficiency, planning, policy formulation, and management towards the realization of smart campuses.

In public and commercial buildings, the reduction of electricity consumption activities can be conducted through 3 paths, including improving the quality level of electric power, increasing the efficiency of electrical equipment, and reducing the waste of electric energy use. In this paper, the energy losses reduction potential on the distribution line of Engineering Faculty, Andalas University buildings through electric power quality improvement are analyzed. Power Quality (PQ) variables that considered in this analysis include power factor, unbalance current load and harmonics distortion. Analysis of correlation between PQ variables is required to determine the power loss on the distribution line of buildings. Using data of PQ variables recorded by Fluke Power Analyzer 435 series II, the energy losses of the distribution line without/with PQ improvement for each building is calculated. Analysis results have shown that the reduction potential is proportional to the value of PQ variables. Administrative faculty building with poor power quality has the potential to reduce its energy losses on the distribution line by 52.62% through power quality improvement. Civil engineering building group with quite good power quality only has the potential to reduce energy losses by 32.81%. Overall, the buildings in this faculty have the potential to reduce energy losses on distribution lines by 34.42% through its power quality improvement.

In this data article, a thorough dataset on patterns of electricity use in Nigerian public universities was presented. Three relatively old public universities with staff and students’ halls of residences were purposively selected. The selected universities were Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (OAU), Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), and University of Ibadan (UI). Data were obtained through the administration of a structured questionnaire on electricity end users in the universities sampled. For the data collection, the electricity end users in public universities were stratified into users in university staff offices, staff residences, student residences, and commercial units. Electricity users were selected using systematic random sampling and accidental sampling techniques. In OAU, FUTA and UI, 217, 137 and 164 students, respectively were sampled; 30, 3, and 61 households in OAU, FUTA, and UI, respectively were sampled while 28, 6, and 18 commercial units in OAU, FUTA and UI, respectively were also sampled. The sample size determined for staff in OAU, FUTA and UI were 139, 81 and 182, respectively. The data obtained were analyzed using radar charts. The information provided in this data article will encourage investigation into electricity management strategies, critical success factors for electricity management, planning, and policy formulation towards the realization of sustainable campuses.
