Smilax (Smilacaceae) is a genus of about 350 species, found in temperate, tropical and subtropical zones worldwide. The plants belonging to this genus are found throughout Asia, Europe, Oceania and the Americas. Species of the genus Smilax commonly called sarsaparilla are characterized as climbers, with long, thin thorny stem. The branches have tendrils which attach to other plants or objects and grow steadily upward. The roots of these plants have been used for centuries in Asia and the Americas as a tonic, diuretic and sudorific. The rhizome, roots, stems and leaves of sarsaparilla are used in traditional medicine. In the scientific literature, there are several reports on immunomodulatory properties, anticonvulsant, antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, antidiabetic and antioxidant properties. However, there are no reports which explain the antioxidant activity of sarsaparilla extracts as a function of phenolic compound structures, such as flavonoids and phenylpropanoids. In this chapter, the relevance of phenolic chemical structure in antioxidant and anticancer activity of sarsaparilla extracts will be described. Special emphasis is placed on phenylpropanoid glycosides that consist of a sucrose core. These compounds are evidence of chemotaxonomy in the genus Smilax.

Los antioxidantes son esenciales en el cuerpo humano para prevenir el daño oxidativo. Estas substancias pueden obtenerse de diversas fuentes como frutas, plantas y hongos. En Guatemala, diversas especies de hongos comestibles son comercializadas y consumidas, sin embargo su actividad antioxidante no ha sido documentada en el país. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la actividad antioxidante de extractos acuosos y etanólicos obtenidos de diez especies de basidiomicetos comestibles (Agaricus aff. bisporus, Agaricus brunnescens, Armillariella polymyces, Amanita garabitoana, Boletus edulis, Cantharellus lateritius, Laccaria amethystina, Lactarius deliciosus, Neolentinus ponderosus y Pleurotus ostreatus). Se utilizó un método cualitativo por cromatografía en capa fina (CCF) y tres ensayos macrométricos in vitro de cuantificación de fenoles totales, reducción del radical 1,1-difenil-2-pricrilhidrazilo (DPPH) y decoloración del radical catiónico del reactivo ácido 2,2’-azinobis-(acido-3-etilbenzotiazolina-6-sulfónico) (ABTS). Los extractos acuosos mostraron mayor actividad antioxidante que los extractos etanólicos en todas las técnicas cuantitativas realizadas. La especie que mostró mayor actividad antioxidante en ambos extractos fue B. edulis, cuyos resultados fueron: fenoles totales del extracto acuoso 93.46 Â± 18.17 mg/g y 42.70 Â± 3.48 mg/g, DPPH CI50 del extracto acuoso 0.93 mg/mL (IC95 0.65-1.28) y 2.75 mg/mL (IC95 2.46-3.07) del extracto etanólico; y en ABTS CI50 del extracto acuoso 0.96 mg/mL (IC95 0.63-1.35) y 4.13 mg/mL (IC95 2.67-5.88) del extracto etanólico. Por la actividad antioxidante de los extractos acuosos de algunas de las especies de basidiomicetos, pueden promoverse como alimentos funcionales.

“…Results demonstrated that 6 species have important antioxidant activity, particularly Smilax domingensis, T. lucida, Litsea guatemalensis, Pimenta dioica, Phlebodium pseudoaureum and Piper auritum. 18 In a group of 44 extracts from 11 species of Piper genus, 4 (P. jacquemontianum, P. psilorachis, P. schippianum and P. variabile) demonstrated antioxidant activity higher than vitamin E and rutin, and similar to vitamin C, quercetina, Trolox, and TBHQ. 19 A study in 3 species with colorant properties, demonstrated that Rhizophora mangle, S. domingensis and Hibiscus sabdariffa demonstrated good activity by the DPPH or TEAC methods, better than vitamin E, but less than quercetin and rutin.…”

IntroductionMesoamerica is a cultural and historical region were several important civilizations developed, such as Toltec, Zapotec, Maya and Aztec. Guatemala is a diverse country, pluricultural and multilingual, with a profoundly syncretic culture as a heritage of Maya and Spanish cultures. It is a region of high diversity, which complement the biological richness with a profound value for this local biodiversity by its inhabitants with an integral vision, including diverse applications such as flavors, aromas, spices and condiments, dyes and colorants; food (grains, oilseeds, fruits, herbs), and medicinal plants, herbals and cosmetics. This minireview paper deals with the historical usage of plants for hair and skin care, and the recent investigations on antioxidant, solar protection and tyrosinase inhibition potential for skin clearing of native species from the Mesoamerican biodiversity.
