Assessing the physiological quality of common bean seeds using the Vigor-S® system and its relation to the accelerated aging test

Abstract: Automated analysis of seed vigor stands out by allowing greater accuracy, standardization, objectivity, and speed in evaluation of the physiological potential of seed lots. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the Vigor-S® system in assessing the physiological quality of common bean seeds compared to the information provided by the traditional vigor tests recommended for this species. Four genotypes of common bean were used, each one represented by four seed lots. Characterization of t… Show more

“…Speed in obtaining results is an important aspect of the use of computerized image analysis of seedlings (Abud et al, 2017). Medeiros et al (2019) studied the physiological quality of common bean seeds with the Vigor-S® system and detected that the use of this image analysis technique allows evaluation of seed physiological potential, which shows the possibility of taking better advantage of the results obtained in the same evaluation.…”

“…The efficiency of the SVIS® system for separation of the lots was emphasized in various studies and, although use of the Vigor-S system is more recent, its efficiency compared to the tests of conventional use was also confirmed by Castan et al (2018) in maize seeds and by Medeiros et al (2019) in common bean seeds.…”

“…In contrast, the efficiency of seedling image analysis using the SVIS® compared to traditional methods for determination of vigor has been confirmed in soybean (Marcos-Filho et al, 2009), wheat (Silva et al, 2012), cucumber (Chiquito et al, 2012), sunflower (Rocha et al, 2015), and coffee (Trujillo et al, 2019) seeds, among other species. Though it is a recently developed system, Vigor-S allows accurate and detailed evaluation of seedlings, which is one important argument for its acceptance among seed analysts (Castan et al, 2018;Medeiros et al, 2019).…”

“…Studies that evaluate the effectiveness of Vigor-S for determining the physiological potential of seeds are still incipient, as verified in the literature by the studies carried out by Castan et al (2018) with corn and Medeiros et al (2019) with common bean. In this sense, this study aimed to verify the effectiveness of the Vigor-S system in the evaluation of the physiological potential of melon seeds.…”
