Assessing the Mental Health of Emerging Adults Through a Mental Health App: Protocol for a Prospective Pilot Study

Abstract: Background Individuals can experience different manifestations of the same psychological disorder. This underscores the need for a personalized model approach in the study of psychopathology. Emerging adulthood is a developmental phase wherein individuals are especially vulnerable to psychopathology. Given their exposure to repeated stressors and disruptions in routine, the emerging adult population is worthy of investigation. Objective In our prospecti… Show more

“…For our investigation, we assessed sleep quality using the Oura ring’s personalized sleep score that uses a combination of individual body metrics (ie, height, weight, age, and gender) with a validated system that detects time spent in different stages of sleep [ 60 , 61 ]. The Samsung smartwatch tracks several user activities and physiological variables 24/7 (for more details on how these devices were used for our study, see Yunusova et al [ 72 ]). We were able to use the watch to assess participants’ heart rate variability (root mean square of successive differences between normal heartbeats [RMSSD]) and beats per minute (BPM) during diurnal periods (RMSSD and day BPM), and during the entire 24-hour period (RMSSD and resting BPM).…”

“…Thirty-two low and highly active participants (17 females, 15 males) were recruited through advertising on university billboards, social media, and via contacts in sport clubs. While the final sample size was similar to other Oura Ring validation studies [6,8,11,16,20,23], the MEDAL project initially aimed to recruit 40 participants but had to accept a slightly smaller sample size due to a limited time-period for data collection and access to devices needed for measurement. The study protocol and selection criteria of participants were designed to recruit a sample with large variation in PA level to enable device validation across the whole intensity span in both controlled and normal environments.…”

“…Whilst RMT data features certainly appear relevant to depression, there is less evidence for the clinical utility of this in improving depression outcomes in young people either through objective screening, symptom management, relapse-prevention, or just-in-time adaptive interventions. Of the 28 records pertaining to clinical utility only 10 were published studies, with the remaining 18 being registries and/or protocols of clinical trials yet to be completed [78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94][95][96] .…”
