The Nile perch fishery sector in Tanzania is important for enhancing the livelihoods and food security for the majority of people living near the Tanzanian portion of Lake Victoria. Despite continued government efforts and other institutions, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO), European Union and World Bank regarding the management of Lake Victoria, the Nile perch fishers have remained relative inefficient in regard to improving their fish catches. The Nile perch small‐scale fisheries sector in particular faces a challenge regarding how to improve production performance while, at the same time, ensuring a sustainable level of fisheries resources. This reality necessitates the measurement and analysis of artisan fishers’ technical efficiency. Accordingly, the present study analyses Nile perch fishers technical efficiency, using a stochastic production frontier (SPF) model based on the sample of 268 Nile perch fishers in the Tanzanian portion of Lake Victoria. The translog stochastic frontier model results indicate the technical efficiency of Nile perch fishers range between 61% and 80%, with an overall average technical efficiency of 75%. This finding implies that, based on existing fishery resources, the current quantity of Nile perch catch can be improved efficiently by 25%, a reality highlighting mismanagement of the lake's fishery resources. The quantity of bait and petrol and the number of hooks used per trip are the most important fishing inputs, indicating a positive Nile perch fishing output–input elasticity. To address the Nile perch fisher inefficiency, it is important to provide subsidized inputs such as outboard engines and mesh gillnets. Provision of access to affordable credits will enable fishers to purchase less destructive fishing inputs and improve the current structure of fishery organizations.

In this paper, we describe the socioeconomic conditions of the small‐scale trap fishery in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and examine the determinants affecting the technical performance of the fleet. The socioeconomic data used in the analysis were derived from random, in‐person interviews with 50 trap fishers, which accounted for about one‐third of the active trap fishers. The study found that the fishery is composed of middle‐aged, small‐scale commodity producers who use traditional, capital‐intensive technologies to target Caribbean spiny lobsters Panulirus argus and various reef fishes. Fishers reported that fishing made up 74% of their household income. We also explored the factors influencing the technical efficiency of the fleet by using a stochastic production frontier model. The analysis suggested that trap operations could increase their gross revenues per trip by 36%, on average, by using current input levels and technology more efficiently. The fleet exhibited decreasing returns to scale. The study also found that a 10% increase in the number of traps tended would raise gross revenues by 0.9% and that baiting traps would raise gross revenues by 1.4%. The analysis suggested that fishing experience and kinship ties were the key determinants of technical efficiency. We also explored the policy implications stemming from these results. Drivers of Labor-Related Indicators across Diverse Mediterranean Fisheries

This regional case study is focused on employment, remuneration and labor productivity, with a particular emphasis on the interplay between labor productivity and other labor-related indicators and macroeconomic conditions in Italy, Egypt, Lebanon and Greece. Its value lies in the high degree of consistency and comparability of the data, owing to a shared data collection methodology. This has allowed for the compilation of both national and regional comparisons. The data is treated in two groups-the first group consists of national data that considers all the active vessels in a country; the second group focuses on the trawl segments of Italy and Egypt. These two countries present an interesting case study because they are so different in terms of labor productivity and remuneration performance. For instance, in Italy labor shortages have caused a shift in fishing strategies towards less labor-intensive operations to maintain the socioeconomic sustainability of the fisheries, while in Egypt macroeconomic conditions have resulted in a larger labor pool and strong incentives to work in the fisheries sector. The regional study demonstrates that labor-related indicators are interconnected and there is an inversely proportional relationship between labor productivity and remuneration and employment levels. This relationship necessitates a combined analysis. The results across and between the countries were compared, with particular attention given to labor productivity and remuneration in the respective countries with a discussion centred around the potential drivers of labor productivity.
