Abstract: This aim of this paper is to assess the use of the heterotrophic/autotrophic ratio as an early indicator of trophic status as a part of development of a real time monitoring program at Anjos Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An in-situ flow cytometer was used to quantify the abundances of phytoplankton and cyanobacteria, which were identified by chlorophyll and phycoerythrin autofluorescence, respectively. Heterotrophic prokaryotes and viruses were quantified by DNA-binding fluorochromes; merozooplankton larvae wer… Show more

“…The heating and mixture of SACW favor diatom and nanophytoplankton production (GONZALEZ-RODRIGUEZ, 1994;TENEMBAUM, 1995;GUENTHER et al, 2008). Also, the heterotrophic/autotrophic ratio and the viral abundance are negatively correlated with temperature (PEREIRA et al, 2010).…”

“…Chan et al (2008) reported a change in current dynamics facilitating anoxic and subanoxic conditions that could be the cause of the mass mortality of fishes and invertebrates in the California system (GRANTHAM et al, 2004). Despite no anoxic conditions' having been observed in SACW, there are human effects such as the sewage impact in the Marine Extractive Reserve of Arraial do Cabo that need to be controlled (PEREIRA et al, 2010;CURY et al, 2011). Further, the emission of chemical substances could undergo an increase in their toxicity by microbial transformation and thus affect resident communities (SOARES, 2008).…”

“…They also observed a high abundance of phytoplankton and a highest viral/bacterial ratio close to PI station (Pereira et al , 2009). Our results showed that PI had hydrological difference from all other stations (Figure 4) probably due its influence from coastal, tropical and subtropical waters (Pereira et al , 2009; 2010) that increases the proportion of live cells ( e.g. , Cl a ) in POM (Tables 1 and 2).…”

“…, Cottrell et al , 2006; Thottathil et al , 2008). In this way, Pereira et al (2010) associated the heterotrophic/autotrophic ratio and the viral abundance with upwelling events in the Cabo Frio system. These authors reported a highest concentration of heterotrophic prokaryotes in the Anjos inlet.…”

“…1) where different degrees of the influence of upwelling are observed in a small spatial scale (Coelho-Souza et al 2012). Though Arraial do Cabo is a marine protected area, it suffers anthropogenic pressures such as harbor practices and sewage disposal (Ferreira et al 2004, Pereira et al 2010, Cury et al 2011.…”
