Aspirin-Induced Hepatotoxicity and Its Effect on Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract: \s=b\Evidence of hepatic disease was sought in 102 children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) who were treated with aspirin. Serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase level was elevated (greater than 39 IU/liter) in 59% of the children. The degree and prevalence of SGOT elevations correlated with aspirin dose and serum salicylate level. Nevertheless, increased SGOT values were frequently present in children receiving moderate aspirin doses and having serum salicylate levels less than 25 mg/100 ml. Elevate… Show more

“…In harmony with our results, ginger showed a potential defensive role against renal ischemia [31] , renal damage induced by alcohol intoxication [32] , and renal toxicity induced by doxorubicin [33] . The data obtained from liver function tests of aspirin intoxicated animals revealed significant elevation of serum transaminases (ALT, AST) in consistency with previous reports [34] indicating damage of hepatic tissue. Consequently, Aspirin hepatotoxicity is demonstrated in light microscopic findings showing degenerative changes of patchy necrosis with substantial periportal infiltration of inflammatory cells including eosinophil, mast cells and lymphocytes typically as described by Prescott [35] .…”

“…Similar findings were reported by Miller and Weissman 11 and Bernstein et al. 12 , who also noted that hepatotoxicity was often associated with active arthritis. Because of these abnormalities, the duration of treatment and the course of the disease were influenced.…”

“…6), which was also observed by Miller and Weissman [I9761 and Plotz [1985]. This rise in SGOT and SGPT at lower salicylate levels could be due to the presence of hepatic changes that are a part of JCA itself [Bernstein et al, 1977;Benson, 19831. The minor transaminase elevation, in the range of 1% to 2 times normal values did not produce any clinical manifestation of hepatic disease.…”
