Abstract: The rockhopper penguins Eudyptes chrysocome have recently been split into the northern E. moseleyi and the southern E. chrysocome rockhopper penguin. It is therefore crucial to have a comprehensive understanding of the biology of each species in order to develop appropriate conservation measures. We investigated the breeding biology of the southern rockhopper on New Island, in the western part of the Falklands Islands, by following the breeding attempt of 160 pairs during the 2006/2007 season and examining the… Show more

“…The colony has approximately 5,000 breeding pairs of E. chrysocome. When a new egg was detected, we marked it with a unique code, measured its length and breadth to the nearest 0.1 mm with vernier callipers and weighed it to the nearest 0.1 g with a digital balance (for more information see Poisbleau et al 2008). In Argentina, the Weldwork was conducted during the austral summer 1998-1999 at Bahía Franklin, Staten Island (54°50ЈS, 64°40.5ЈW), in a subcolony located above the Arroyo Pedro where >500 pairs breed (Schiavini 2000).…”

“…These rates were low and no twins were raised. In 2006-2007 in the Falkland Islands, the breeding success was 69% for 54 nests, and 2.6% of 114 nests raised two chicks until Xedging (Poisbleau et al 2008).…”

“…Rockhopper penguins exhibit an extreme egg-size dimorphism paired with a reverse hatching 172 asynchrony, with the smaller and first-laid (A-)eggs hatching on average one day after the 173 second laid and 28% larger (B-)eggs (Poisbleau et al 2008;Demongin et al 2010a). Due to 174 the size-dimorphism between siblings, A-chicks usually die few days after hatching as they 175 cannot compete for food with their larger sibling (Gwynn 1953;Warham 1975 0.80, all p < 0.001).…”
