Asiaticoside induces cell proliferation and collagen synthesis in human dermal fibroblasts

Abstract: BACKGROUNDAsiatiocoside, a saponin component isolated from Centella asiatica can improve wound healing by promoting the proliferation of human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) and synthesis of collagen. The skin-renewing cells and type I and III collagen synthesis decrease with aging, resulting in the reduction of skin elasticity and delayed wound healing. Usage of natural active compounds from plants in wound healing should be evaluated and compared to retinoic acid as an active agent that regulates wound healing. Th… Show more

“…Madecassoside was shown to augment inflammatory cell infiltration, and to nurture re-epithelialization to achieve an almost complete wound closure with an improved healing pattern in the burned skin on mice [78]. Furthermore, in vitro studies have demonstrated the ability of madecassoside to promote type I and III collagen synthesis and to stimulate the proliferation of cultured human fibroblasts [78]; similar findings were also reported for asiaticoside [79]. Madecassoside was shown to augment endothelial cell growth in rat aortic rings in vitro, and to markedly increase angiogenesis in mouse burn wounds; it was hypothesized that madecassoside expedites burn wound healing through increased antioxidative activity, enriched collagen synthesis and angiogenesis [78].…”

“…(15) Therefore, asiaticoside as an active component isolated from CA can improve wound healing. (16) Asiaticoside displays the highest activity and has been widely used in wound healing treatment and anti-aging cosmetics, hence it also can be used as active mosturizing agent. (15) The study conducted by Julianti et al (17) showed that CA ethanolic extract encapsulated into chitosan nanoparticles can be used as moisturizer for antiaging activity by inducing AQP3 expression in NHEKs.…”
