Among the multiple determinants of marital satisfaction, evidence points to the social skills of married couples. This study investigates the correlations between these constructs, cross-correlating data from husband and wives. A total of 406 married individuals, 188 men and 218 women, completed the Marital Satisfaction Scale, Social Skills Inventory (SSI-Del-Prette) and Marital Social Skills Inventory (MSSI-Villa&Del-Prette). The results revealed a significant correlation among the scores of the three instruments, confirming the relationship between marital satisfaction and the social skills of married couples. In the cross-correlations, three classes of marital social skills (proactive self-control, reactive self-control and expressiveness/empathy) were more strongly correlated to husbands’ marital satisfaction, and husbands’ three social skills (assertive conversation, self-assertiveness and expressiveness/empathy) were correlated with wives’ marital satisfaction. Gender differences concerning the importance of one spouse’s social skills leading to the other spouse’s satisfaction are stressed as an item to be used in detailed diagnostics and effective interventions with couples. Some issues for future research are also discussed.

ResumoPesquisas associam benefícios pessoais e interpessoais à empatia, uma habilidade de interação social que abrange aspectos cognitivos, afetivos e comportamentais. A empatia envolve a capacidade para adotar a perspectiva afetiva e cognitiva do outro (tomada de perspectiva), para importar-se genuinamente com o bem-estar alheio (sensibilidade afetiva) e para comportar-se de forma congruente, expressando ao interlocutor que o compreende e se preocupa com o mesmo. Estudos recentes têm relacionado esta habilidade ao perdão interpessoal, o qual caracteriza-se pela mudança cognitiva, afetiva e comportamental em relação a um ofensor específi co, de uma polaridade negativa a outra positiva. Neste estudo, objetivou-se avaliar o valor preditivo da empatia sobre o perdão, a partir de medidas de autorrelato multidimensionais. O Inventário de Empatia e o Enright Forgiveness Inventory foram aplicados a uma amostra brasileira, composta por 172 participantes. Análises de regressão indicaram que três fatores empáticos -Tomada de Perspectiva, Sensibilidade Afetiva e Altruísmo -foram preditores do perdão, nas dimensões afetiva e comportamental. Os resultados encontrados apoiam a importância da empatia para a ocorrência do perdão e sugerem que investir nesta habilidade seja um meio promissor de promoção do perdão em intervenções para superação da mágoa.Palavras-chave: Empatia, perdão, tomada de perspectiva. Marital satisfaction is a construct that is relevant to psychology research due to its signifi cance in terms of establishing this interpersonal relationship. The present study examines the factor structure of the Marital Satisfaction Scale (MSS). The MSS has frequently been employed in Brazilian studies, incorporated as a convergent measure for producing criterion validity evidence in the elaboration of new psychometric methods. Nonetheless, its psychometric properties have not been substantiated for 25 years. A non-probabilistic sample of 249 people from Rio de Janeiro participated in the present study, their ages ranging between 21 and 77 years (M = 45.3; SD = 13.26). They had been married or involved in a civil union (also known as a "domestic partnership" or "common-law marriage" depending on the location) for an average of 19.5 years (SD = 12.88). The collected data was assessed via exploratory and confi rmatory factor analyses. Such assessment revealed several items exhibiting poor psychometric performance. Nevertheless, an abridged version of the MSS provided simplicity and produced excellent fi t indices. It also yielded validity evidence of the existence of a second-order factor. The estimated reliability for both the factors and the entire scale ranged between 0.85 and 0.93. Keywords:Marital satisfaction, marital relationship, psychometric properties.
